The Definitive Desktop Environment Comparison (Eugenia Loli-Queru)

So many operating systems and so many graphical desktop environments... This article is a comparison of the UI and usability of several Desktop Environments (DEs), that have been widely used, admired and reviled: Windows XP Luna, BeOS 6 (Dano/Zeta), Mac OS X Aqua and Unix's KDE and Gnome. Read on which one got our best score on our long term test and usage.

Please note that although officially a "dead" OS, BeOS is included in the comparison. I had the pleasure of trying out BeOS a year or so back, and was extremely impressed with the speed, ease of use, and handling of that puppy. It just did what it was supposed to do with little or no effort. I know plans are afoot to be produce an open-source version of Be. I am keeping an eye on such things, and will be very curious to see if anything develops in that area. Thanks to slashdot for the link.

Groupmind: Eyebees

Jack Bury, a 20-year old poet, is co-creator of a Microsoft IE add-in called Eyebees. If you join a "swarm" - people interested in the same topic - the add-in shows you the movement of all other swarm members as they go from site to site. Click on one of the dots representing a swarm member and you are taken to whatever site they're visiting. It's a visceral visual experience.

Writes Jack: "The enveloping presence of thousands of minds, tracing across the Internet Sky in strange union - hissing and livid and one in censure of war - would be a conspicuous, awe-inspiring sight of this next social revolution taking firm hold." (JOHO the blog)

Visual Thesaurus

This is the coolest thing, like... ever. Everyone go to Visual Thesaurus.com. This thing is beautiful. I think I saw God in there. Haha. (blogcritics)

I did not see god. But this is indeed interesting. Here's what they have to say for themselves:

"An experiment in language and interface, Plumb Design's Visual Thesaurus is both an artistic exploration and a tool to explore, study, and analyze the structure of language. By displaying the interrelationships between words and meanings as spatial maps, the Visual Thesaurus translates language into a visible architecture... The new Visual Thesaurus exposes more of the relationships between words and their meanings to reveal clusters of words and meanings related by underlying lexical concepts."

Nice brain toy! Go Play!

Let the Games Begin... (Dan Murphy)

Terrorist leaders recruit with claims of a global, US-led 'crusade' against Islam.

... from Pakistan to Indonesia, Islamic reformers who are allies of pluralism and moderation are watching the kmassing of US troops in the Gulf with something approaching panic. They expect an Iraq war to galvanize Muslim populations - but not in the way the US hopes. They fear that in the slipstream of invasion will be a surge of global Muslim anger that will play into the hands of fundamentalist politicians and curtail reformers' influence. Naked Blogging

Technical difficulties with my server prevented me from posting today, and my posts are back at work; I will post them tomorrow. My brother complained about the tiny fonts, another friend says my blog looks all messed up on her Mac. I will have to see what that's all about, but in the meantime I have bumped up my fontsize a tad. How's it look, bro?

I was keping the font size small in effort to save storage space on my server. Yeah, that's it.

And yes I am sitting here writing this quite stark naked. Too much information? Quite so. Came in quite handy, actually. Read two articles down. Spring is, after all, in the air....

Idiot du jour...

That's french for idiot of the day. A possible new feature for this particular weblog... like shooting fish in a barrel these days. It has probably ever been thus. From the Sunday New York Times:

"... Representative Ginny Brown-Waite, Republican of Florida, has introduced legislation that would allow the remains of World War II veterans buried in France to be brought home. The remains of our brave servicemen should be buried in patriotic soil, not in a country that  has turned its back on the United States and on the memory of Americans who fought and died there," Ms. Brown-Waite said. "It's almost as if the French have forgotten what those thousands of white crosses at Normandy represent."

Way to legislate Ginny! What a total lack of regard for historical perspective. But we've come to expect no less from our elected officals in these sick and twisted times. This particular weblog... waves it's red white and blue genitals in your general direction. Ginny Brown-Waite, we salute you.
