Separated at birth? Kismet, pet project of the MIT AI Lab's Humanoid Robot Group:

is a robot that "perceives a variety of natural social cues from visual and auditory channels, and delivers social signals to the human caregiver through gaze direction, facial expression, body posture, and vocal babbles."

And -- seen at the Whitney Biennial last weekend, Emoter --

"a large color photograph of a face with moveable lips, eyelids and the like, that grimaces and pouts thanks to tiny servo-motors according to the motion of people in the room."
