Well, today I'm afraid I might not have much more to offer than a passage or two from my grandfather's 1914 service handbook, "The American Waiter," a book I believe he might have been given by an employer, and which is filled with drinks recipes in the back penned in a crabbed hand.
Under "Deportment," we find this:
Keep out of strikes. If you are asked to join in a strike for better wages refuse point blank. And I would advise you to offer to quit; but first explain why you do so, stating your reason for quitting is to keep out of strikes."
And here is the recipe for strong coffee:
One pound best coffee.
White of one egg.
Pinch of salt.
Coffee sack.
One gallon boiling water.
White of one egg? This boggles my already overtaxed mind.
