The Eagle Has Landed - In Sin City!

Whoa...What a day of traveling. My original 1:00 PM flight out of Anchorage was cancelled (the plane was marooned in Juneau). Alaska Airlines did a great job of rebooking me and getting me here to Las Vegas. It just took a lot longer than originally scheduled. And of course, my luggage is still not here and won't arrive until mid-day tomorrow.

But that's all o.k. I'm happy to finally arrive. And wow! Where I arrived to is pretty impressive. I'm staying at Caesar's Palace (where the conference is being held) and my room is giant. It's bigger than my first apartment, my first condo, and even the first house I rented. I think we could hold the conference in my room.

I also have a great view of The Strip. Not bad. Except for my very late arrival. I don't think I'll be making the 8:30 AM keynote address tomorrow morning.

Fortunately, I found Moline Lake, its picnic grounds and potty just in time!!!! This facility may look somewhat skanky to you, but beggers can't be choosers and I thought it looked wonderful!!!!!

Oh - and the little green potty sitting there in front of the big white potty, is the Big Flush geocaching travel bug. I brought him with me to Kansas!

Here are some pix of GCI's spiffy Smith Tower surroundings. That old school charm is just irresitable.

This is the women's 3rd floor restroom. You may wonder what on earth that green thing is that I'm holding. It's a geocaching travel bug - specifically, it's the Big Flush whose goal in life is to travel around the world and have his picture taken in various potties.

So, when I dropped Barney off at the Loveland Geocache, I picked up another travel bug - The Big Flush. The Big Flush's goal is, "To travel from cache to cache, and travel the world and see as many of the fancy restrooms as possible."

Is this a job for the Slat Rat or what? The Big Flush will definitely visit many of the potties made famous in the Bathrooms I Have Visited section of my blog.

And here's a picture of Flush. Definitely not as photogenic as Barney.

A fun article in Monday's Daily News on the best downtown potties.

I feel very cutting edge, media-wise, with my Bathrooms I Have Visited category. But I have to say that I don't quite romanticize bathrooms in the way the reporter does:

It's an interlude between our inner and outer selves, a safe place to cry about work and relationships, where we can escape the tedious details of our lives while crouched on a toilet seat imagining grander things. Finding a nice bathroom in the midst of shopping, watching a play or buying a book can be as reassuring as meeting up with an old friend. It can reaffirm our best hopes while offering the strength needed to pull up our pants and face this often cruel and impersonal world.

Although, I agree that the heated potty seats at Orso definitely border on the sublime.

Here's the very cute port-a-potty I used after the race.

A port-a-potty decorating contest is part of the race festivities. This port-a-potty was decorated by the Steer girls in honor of their mom who is a breast cancer survivor. The Steer kids are quite a group - Rachael Steer is a member of the U.S. Biathalon Team. Zach Steer finished second in the Yukon Quest - a long distance dog race that is actually tougher than the Iditarod.

It's about time our Master Bedroom watercloset made it into my blog. But, prior to today, our potty was pretty bland. However, this afternoon Peter picked up Sponge Bob and now we have the happiest bathroom in the neighborhood!

Yet another entry in the "Potties" category.

This particular loo is the handicapped stall of the women's restroom at GCI's Dimond Center offices.

I was at the Dimond Center offices on Friday. On the way out, I made a precautionary pit stop. As I was sitting on the potty, I happened to look up and what should I see but a poster of one of my favorite paintings in the whole world: Matisse's Femme au Chapeau. The painting that blasted Fauvism into the public consciouness. I absolutely love this painting and I visit her at SFMoMa every time I'm in San Francisco.

I renewed acquaintances with the woman in the colorful hat two weeks ago today.

This innocuous little port-a-potty was located at the start of the road construction zone at milepost 98 on the Glen Highway. Just behind the potty, you can see the Matanuska Glacier.

More 2003 Alaska Run for Women Porta Potties!

GCI had the winning porta-potty in the decorated porta potty competition! A pretty snazzing looking phone. Kudos to Al Contreras and Pebbles Athanasiou-Harris for a great design and execution of the design!

Golf Course Porta-Potty

A very scenic potty location. This porta-potty is on the 4th hole at Moose Run Golf Course. It is fairly typical golf course potty equipment. But it is nicely nestled in the trees.

An interior view. There's something arty about this picture - almost Dada or Surrealistic. I think it's the very round smooth plastic and the two contrasting color tones.

The bathrooms in the FAA building in Dillingham are in a class by themselves. I have never in my life seen a skankier potty (except for the outhouses at Turnagain Pass). These pictures are from last year - you need a strong stomach to view the pics.

I'm starting a new category - "Bathrooms I Have Visited". I am frequently struck by the unique and sometimes very odd nature of various potties I have visited. So I've decided to start documenting them.

This first entry is not really out of the ordinary. This is the "head" on the Major Marine boat out of Seward. What makes it unique is that it was the cleanest bathroom I checked in on Saturday. And who would thought a boat would have the best pottie. The picture doesn't really do it justice.
