Lee Sinns on Mike Camerons Homers

Rather than include all of the material in tomorrow's reports, I've decided
to come up with a special Mike Cameron edition of the ATM reports. It's not
exactly unprecedented. One day last year, there were so many Gary Sheffield
rumors that one of the installments was called the Around the Sheffield
report. But, a nighttime special edition, as opposed to just a breaking
news story, is unprecedented in ATM report history.

1) Cameron became the 13th player to hit 4 HR in a game.

2) Cameron and Bret Boone both hit 2 HR in the 1st inning. They joined Von

4) In addition to becoming the 1st teammates to both hit 2 HR in the same
inning, Cameron and Boone also became the first teammates to hit back to
back HRs twice in the same inning.

Here's the list of the teammates that did it in the same game--

Paul Hines, Jerry Denny         Hoosiers  June 14, 1889
Goose Goslin, Joe Judge         Senators  May 26, 1930
Johnny Frederick, Babe Herman   Dodgers   June 1, 1930

5) Cameron's 4 HR gives him 97 for his career. In all likelihood, he's
going to reach 100 in the season of his 4 HR game.

Rocky Colavito and Mike Schmidt were the others who reached 100 in their 4
HR season. Bob Horner reached 200 and Willie Mays reached 300 in the
seasons of their 4 HR games.

As far as multiples of 50--Gil Hodges and Joe Adcock reached 50 and Chuck
Klein and Lou Gehrig reached 250.

6) All 4 HR games in AL history were done by visiting players.

7) Cameron tied the AL record with 16 total bases in a game.

Ty Cobb         May 5, 1925    3 HR, 2 1B, 2B
Lou Gehrig      June 3, 1932   4 HR
Jimmie Foxx     July 10, 1932  3 HR, 2 1B, 2B
Pat Seerey      July 18, 1948  4 HR
Rocky Colavito  June 10, 1959  4 HR
Fred Lynn       June 18, 1975  3 HR, 1B, 3B
Mike Cameron    May 2, 2002    4 HR

The major league record is 18, by Joe Adcock, on July 31, 1954--4 HR, 2B.

8) Cameron's 4 HR moves him into a tie for 2nd in the league.

Here's where the other 4 HR hitters ranked in the league, for the season
containing their 4 HR game--

1st--Mike Schmidt
tied for 1st--Ed Delahanty, Rocky Colavito
2nd--Willie Mays
tied for 2nd--Bobby Lowe
tied for 3rd--Chuck Klein, Gil Hodges
4th--Lou Gehrig
tied for 5th--Bob Horner
9th--Pat Seerey

Did not rank in the top 10--Joe Adcock, Mark Whiten

Whiten was the only other player to have a 4 HR game and never have a top
10 ranking in a season. Cameron doesn't currently have a top 10 ranking to
his credit.

9) According to Baseball Tonight, Cameron was the only player to hit 4 solo
HR, have a 4 HR game against his former team and have a 4 HR game within
the first 5 innings.
