Beckham being made much of in the commentary... Oh well.
I notice, though, that it's not just the hair. There's a joke beard as well.

One more point made much of on the news was that there'd been no hooligan problems before the game.
It'll be interesting to see what happens if England lose...

One more striking aspect of the World Cup coverage is that Beckham appears to have become a news item in his own right. Along with reports about the England team on the news just now, there was a separate report about Beckham being able to play.
Ah well, I suppose there's no accounting for tastes; quite how anyone with such a ludicrous hairstyle could be revered in the way he seems to be, I can't work out. I suppose, though, that this could be why I'm not earning how many thousand pounds a week...

Watched the news before the start of the England-Sweden match. One striking thing is that at all the matches, there are groups of Japanese girls there not to watch the football, but just to go wild when the teams arrive. It really is a groupie phenomenon- I wonder if it happens in every country, or whether Japan is particular in this regard? And, if Japan is particular, is the adoration simply because the players are foreigners? Admittedly, there seems to be quite a following for the Japanese players as well, but even so, the foreign team groupies are far greater in numbers than I would have expected.
