My lessons at Kirikushi went pretty well this afternoon. In the first lesson, with the 2nd years, I tested the children to see whether they'd learned the classroom vocabulary I taught them the last time, and then we practiced this vocabulary by playing 'dengon-gemu'. The children enjoyed it hugely; I found some of the answers they gave entertaining. Confusing 'chalk' and 'chair', and calling a name-tag a 'namewatch badge', stick in the mind especially. With the fourth-years, we made the Christmas trees I'd prepared. Many of the children took nearly all of the lesson just to cut out the two trees; perhaps I should include fewer branches in the design if I do the lesson again... Also, most of the children didn't seem to have listened to me (or at least, to have taken in what I said) when I explained that they needed to put the two trees together before they decorated them- nearly everyone decorated the trees separately, which meant that when they put them together nothing matched up. Oh well, they'll learn sooner or later to listen to explanations... Overall, though, the lesson wasn't a bad one.

According to the Electronic Telegraph, the BBC has suggested that the disclosures about the private life of Diana following the trial of her butler may cost her votes in the Great Briton competition I mentioned last week. Well, I don't really have any interest about what the late Princess did or did not get up to, but I'm glad that people are beginning to see a little more sense. Incidentally, Diana has been replaced by Sir Isambard Kingdom Brunel; I still think that Shakespeare should be in the lead, but I'm happy enough with Brunel. After all, he was the architect of one of the most superb railway journeys in Britain- there can be few more exhilerating spots than the approach to, and crossing of, the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash.

It's still only the beginning of November, but I spent the morning making... Christmas trees. It's my last lesson of the term with the 4th years in Kirikushi this afternoon, and so, although it's still very early, they want to do something Christmas-based. And who am I to go against their wishes?
