Rock Band Cares About More Then Just Themselves!
INCUBUS ANNOUNCES "MAKE YOURSELF FOUNDATION" GRANTS FOR 2005
Band Donates $100,000 to the American Red Cross
New York, NY - Grammy award nominated rock band Incubus today announced a number of donations today through their non-profit organization, the Make Yourself Foundation. At the top of the list, the band is donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund. Founded in 2004 by the band, the Make Yourself foundation was established to donate funds to various charities which are listed on the Make Yourself Foundation website (www.makeyourselffoundation.org). In its first year, the Foundation raised an astounding $400, 000 through Incubus' music-related activities while the band toured around the world.
When sitting down to decide how to best allocate the funds, the massive tsunami hit Asia, altering the band's initial plan. The band explains, "We started the MYF as a vehicle to try and help people who have not been as fortunate as us. Last year we spent the year raising money and bringing attention to a number of worthy causes. When we sat down in December to allocate the money, we had no idea of the disaster that was about to happen. The magnitude of the tsunami disaster is truly overwhelming and we can only hope that this donation can help bring some relief to the people who've been affected by it."
In addition to the Tsunami relief effort The Make Yourself Foundation will be making donations to the following organizations.
The Red Cross www.redcross.org
Future Forests www.futureforests.com
International Rett Syndrome Association www.rettsyndrome.org
The Painted Turtle www.thepaintedturtle.com
Surfrider Foundation www.surfrider.com
Operation Smile www.operationsmile.com
Heal The Bay www.healthebay.org
Institute of Music and Neurologic Function www.bethabe.com
Sweet Relief www.sweetrelief.org
Save the Music www.vh1.com/partners/save_the_music/home.html
Break the Cycle www.breakthecycle.org
The band is planning more charitable related music projects this year.

A Perfect Circle Get Political!
A Perfect Circle is releasing a new album on election day that is "a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed".I kinda wished it would come out before the election to get us in the right mood :-) For the entire article about this album go to: http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000626795.

Cheap Trick - From Tokyo to You (DVD)
Let me first start off saying that I am a HUGE Cheap Trick fan. I buy anything they put out. While this DVD is great, it is not a live DVD... it is really a documentary (or rockumentary). With that in mind, it has great insight to the history of the band that I never knew like Tom invented Pop Tarts and Rick's dad was a famous opera singer.
I was let down that there is no way to watch the concert footage (most of it new songs) in its entirety.

Iron Maiden Back, But Do We Want Them?
Today Rolling Stone released an article about the Iron Maiden "Dance" back outlining their tour and new album. I personally am going to skip their appearance in San Diego this week. Why? Well... their last album was week, during their last concert Bruce actually had the balls to say that they were going to bring metal back and they played way too many songs from the new album during the show.
Come on Bruce, groups like Disturbed, Tool, Sevendust and others are bringing metal back, not you. Take your place in history... keep touring, keep playing to the old (good) songs with a few (very few) new songs mixed in. That's what we like. Oh, curb the attitude too.
One parting question... does Iron Maiden really need three guitarists?

Billy Graham... Lead News Story?
Today our local NBC affiliate decided (for some strange reason) that the lead story of the day would be about the Evangelist Billy Graham holding a four-day mission at Qualcomm Stadium. The segment showed mission goers delighted that they get to hear this great man speak. Isn’t this the same man who said that if we listen to musicians like Ozzy Osbourne we would go to hell? Isn’t this the same man that said that if he does not get six million dollars by a certain date he was going to die?
Enough said!

HeavyMealDave Meets P.O.D.! Do you Believe In Fate?
I do! On October 25, 2002 (the afternoon of the Creed concert here in San Diego) I took my son to the Wherehouse to pickup an Xbox game. I saw the latest CD from P.O.D. on one of the stands in the middle of the store. Since my son and I both like P.O.D. (We saw them in September at Ozzfest. They were the first band there that made the concert worth the $70 ticket price!), I asked him if we wanted it and of course he said yes! I also (for some reason) left my digital camera in my car, even though I knew I could not use it later that night at the Creed concert.
So, that evening I went to see the rescheduled Creed show at Cox Arena (the same place that P.O.D. shot their Boom video). After the show we decided to go to McGregor's Grill in Mission Valley to see what was going on there. The front area of the place was of course way to packed so we went to the back area (we where there before the Creed show to grab a bite to eat). The waitress we had earlier in the day told me Sonny from P.O.D. was just a few feet away from me. I could not believe it since I just bought their CD that day!
I told my friend that I have to go over and get his autograph for my son (since he could not be there). I went over to Sonny and introduced myself and asked if he could sign the back of one of my HeavyMetalDave.Net business cards for my son. Sonny asked his name and was more than happy to! While he was doing so, one of the girls in his group asked if I had a camera. I was about to say no and I remembered I left my camera in my car. I told her I could go to my car and get it and she said that she would take a picture of Sonny and I! Then Sonny gave me the signed business card and told me he signed it with his "real" name. He did this because he and my son have the same name and he loves that name!!!!
So I dashed out to my car as fast as I could to retrieve my camera. When I came back I kinda had to wait in line for the picture behind some female fans. Then his friend took the picture you see to the left of Sonny and I. Then I had a few minutes to talk to him. Asked him what the band is up to and told him I really like their Satellite video. Told him I really like the part at the end when they pan up from San Diego! He seemed to like that part too! Also told him that I think it's great his band is bringing attention to music being created in San Diego. He also mentioned that they are going to be on a song on the new Santana CD!
Sonny is one of the most down to earth, "non-rock star mentality" musicians I have ever meet! It's nice to see that even though their latest CD went triple platinum, he is just a normal guy and has time for his fans! Thanks Sonny!

Creed Postpones San Diego Concert
10/9/2002: Creed announced that they will not be coming to San Diego on the 11th. Scott has strep throat. Not only did they almost pass us by, now it's been put on hold! No new date has been announced.
Looks like Sevendust is leaving the tour later this month, so I doubt that they will be on the new date. I for one really wanted to see Sevendust!
Seems like Creed has been plagued with problems on this tour... Scott getting hurt one way or the other. I wonder what is going on??

Creed Still Not Coming To San Diego
Creed announced their tour dates for the 2nd leg on their upcoming tour (after Scott Stapps injuries) and San Diego is still not on their list! Creed did make it here during their last tour (with Sevendust and Nickleback) and it was an awesome show! Why they chose to pass us by is beyond me. They are HUGE in San Diego.
Very typical that bands pass San Diego by :-( Voice a complaint by sending e-mail to: windup@winduprecords.com

Letter to KIOZ (Rock 105.3) in San Diego
I would just like to give my two cents about the recent events of When Bands Attack III. When Godsmack dropped yesterday the bottom dropped out for me. I’m a hard working single dad and I have been looking forward to this concert for weeks. I could take Qzzy backing out because I had Godsmack to fallback on, but now there is no “big named” band left on the bill.
I can tell you the reason why these to big acts dropped... its San Diego! I have lived here for 21 years and we have always been treaded unfairly (for the most part) by big bands. Many don’t come here (like Ozzy) or they only come during inconvenient times of the week. Do you think if this concert were in Los Angeles these bands would have backed out? I don’t think so! L.A. is too important, we aren’t.
Godsmack knew about Ozzy backing out. They even had contact with you after 9/11 to donate money to charity and 1 ½ days before they back out leaving us without a headlining act! This is just bad. They can’t make this up to us.
So we are left with three sort of popular bands (Staind, Linkin Park, Deftones) that have singers that just stand there on stage whining with their eyes closed most of the time. Boring! Plus Deftones was at When Bands Attack II. Your station rarely even plays Deftones!
Also, I would like to complain about the ticket prices. In the past WBA was really cheap to go to but this year I was willing to pay $71.95 because Ozzy and Godsmack was on the bill. They are big, they are worth it! But now, that cost seems hardly worth it to see the bands that on the bill now. BC and Woody says to be patriotic and go to the concert have fun… well how is KIOZ going to be patriotic and make this up to it’s listeners? How about donating the money you were going to pay Ozzy and Godsmack to the Redcross? That would make me feel better.
So am I going? No, my friends and I decided that at this cost it’s just not worth it. We got our many back!

Bob Dylan Snows The Grammys!
On 2/27/02 Bob Dylan performed at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. Not really sure why… maybe because somehow his new album actually was nominated for an award… not sure why about that either. While he was performing his jumbled up non-sensible song, I could only believe he was thinking the following behind his smirk and rolling eyes…
“You all are so stupid! I can’t sing, my songs make no sense but still you think I’m great and you buy my albums. You all even nominated me for an award! Can you all understand any of the words coming out of my mouth? I really don’t know what I’m doing but it’s so funny watching you all lapping it up!”
