Will Wonders Never Cease?. - "There is a good deal of wondering to be had at "The Public's Treasures: A Cabinet of Curiosities," at the New York Public Library. It is rather different in nature from the wondering that happens at the Museum of Jurassic Technology and the Salon de Fleurus, though; those places deliberately engage the visitor's imagination by matching coy, playful or obscure curatorial language to the objects on display, as though to underline that without a story, context or provenance many of these strange (or sometimes just ordinary) things might quickly slip from the realm of the beguiling into that of the banal."
"The show at the library attends to this issue but in a more intrinsic way. While many of its objects are historically significant, easily as many others require the context they are given by Jeanne Bornstein, Meg Maher and Holland Goss, the exhibition's curators. They have dug around in all of the library's divisions to look at their holdings through what Ms. Maher, in an interview, called a "fresh and, ideally, surprised eye.""
