Life with a Pug

Day 7

Honeymoon - Day Seven

Date: January 17, 2002
Place: Cruise Ship -> Labadee, Haiti

Jet SkisWe woke early and got breakfast so we could make our 8:30am tour... we had signed up for the Wave Runner tours!!!  How exciting... and a bit nerve-raking!

So, we had a quick video about safety and controls and then we were off to board the tender ship which brought us to shore.  Once on shore, we headed directly to the sports beach and were prepped for our tour.  We met with our tour guide, got another quick safety/instructional lecture and then put on some life vests.

I also had to put on a special "love handles" harness that had handle grips for emily to grab onto.  We then hopped onto a wave runner and begain our adventure!

It was scary and also exhilarating!  Emily was hanging on for dear life!!!  It was bumpy, fast, crazy, and fun!  The swells in the ocean don't look that big until you are flying over them at 45 mph!  We had a short ride then stopped for a quick lecture by the tour guide.

We saw a local village3 that had no electricity, running water, etc - whereas a village only hundreds of yards away had electricity, modern conviniences, etc...  The difference was that the latter village all worked for the cruise line!  All their income and resources were provided, whereas the other villagers fished for their dinner, farmed for their breakfast.  Quite different lives!

Then, back to the wave runners.  This time, we went faster, over big ocean wave swells ( up to four feet ), and tight turns.  It proved a little to much for emily and me - on the first hairpin turn, we both leaned into the turn and actually cap-sized the machine!! It wasn't bad since we weren't going that fast, but it was quite unexpected all the same.  It was much harder for the both of us to get back up on the wave runner then expected.  Luckily one of the guides held onto the wave runner while I helped emily back on.  Emily was a bit shaken but ready to get going again.  We joined the group and then got back up to speed... we just avoided the tight turns. :)

On the Wave Runner
As fun as the wave runners were, we were both glad to get back to dry land.

Once back on land, we worked our way over to the beach areas.  We stopped at a bar to get some sodas and catch our breath after that experience.

Then, we found a wonderful spot on the beach.  In the shade of palm trees, we found an empty hammock.  We claimed it at once!  I relaxed in the hammock while emily lounged in a beach chair.  We stayed there for awhile relaxing, reading our boos, and people watching.

We then went off to get some lunch.  It was a free-for-all barbeque under a pavillion.  We got some food and actually met up with the newlyweds from Sweden.  Then, after eating, we walked through the locals' craft market and to the various look-out points.  Emily then planted herself in some shade while I explored a little more.

Trees
The shade was a very plesant way to keep cool.

Around 3pm, we decided we were worn out and went back onto the ship.  We laid around and then got ready for dinner.  After dinner, we caught the show.  The guy performing was a former member of Foreigner!  It was an okay show, but the finale was the best... he came out playing a rhinestone-studded bagpipe!!  Very funny.  It was a perfect ending to the day!
