well my first day was this past monday. we met at 8:30a in the auditorium for introductions. we went alphabetically and each person had to go up front as your picture and personal info were displayed on the big screen and introduce yourself, saying your name, where you were from, something interesting and if you were to graduate today what would you do. you got your purple scrub top class of 2006 and the doctor of veterinarian medicine oath. after the long intros we had to raise our right hand and repeat the oath. next we were let go for lunch and back at 1p for a little more orientation.

at 4:30p there was the picnic where we were to meet our senior mentors and faculty mentors. this week we would spend in clinics shadowing seniors on whatever rotation they were in at the time. for me tues. and wed. was exotics and thurs./fri. will be equine. exotics would be w/ tracey, who is also my permanent senior mentor whom i will follow all year long in clinics on friday afternoons. shannon is just for the couple days this week of equine. i met them both and found out where to meet them in the mornings. i have yet to met my faculty mentor, dr. mosier.

at the picnic i had one of the best hamburgers, some beans, veggies and dip and a piece of watermelon. a piece of watermelon in kansas is literally a foot long if not more!! i had to leave the picnic to go meet my future 2nd roommate, katie. she moves in tomorrow. she's a senior undergrad w/ a black lab so now i'm living w/ 1 guy, 1 girl and 3 dogs! craziness!!!!!

i've been going out a lot since i've been here. my roommate, jonathan, likes to hang out outside the house and he's been inviting me along everywhere. i've been to a few different bars. nothing very exciting but lots of alcohol. rusty's last chance reminds me of the cask. it has a small dance floor that i've danced until closing (2a) now twice w/ phil, another senior and jonathan's friend. i've been to a barbecue where you have to grill and eat steak, play drinking games and roast marshmellows.

yesterday i went to the topeka zoo w/ 2 other first years, 2 seniors, a pharmacy student and a professor. i watched the seniors do exams on a crane and 2 storks. we checked out an overweight boa, a sick boa, an elderly hippo, etc. we picked up a wild duck that resided at the zoo who has some joint problems and took it back to the vet hosptial w/ us as a good sam (good samaritan) case. on the way home there was a loose pig on interstate 70 so we got off and told this farmer he might have a loose pig. that was probably the highlight. very exciting :0)

for the afternoon i watched a necropsy on a dog, fed a baby opossum, saw a wallaby get an MRI...

today i went to the sunset zoo right down the street and observed the seniors vaccinating two river otters. i was actually the photographer taking pictures of all the procedures. they had their teeth cleaned and polished, vaccinated for rabies, etc., had a physical exam, blood taken... very cute animals. only about 5-6 kg.

i recently went to financial aid to staighten it all out and will end up taking out a private bank loan to cover the rest of tuition and some living expenses. this school charges for everything: class notes packet of photocopies $170, student ID $15, books $500 but i'm only going to buy 2 books for now on recommendation from the seniors. it's just too expensive.

well i'm off now to buy my books. stay tuned...

QUOTES

It's better to burp and bear the shame than not to burp and bear the pain.

Grandpa Martin, RIP

Keep your wits about you.

Dr. Wally Cash, DVM

If the present sucks, then look to the future.

RobReed, BadBoy

Well, I want to try everything in life.

Heather Rose Martin, CFG (crazy freak girl)

In the book of life there's only two women, big ol' good ones and good ol' big ones.

Ice Cube, HipHopper

I'd rather have a terrorist standing next to me than a Frenchman. (~15 min. later) Oh, I forgot about that, that's another reason I don't like the French, they eat horses.

Dr. Dee Griffin, DVM

Think about it. Sometimes people are just destined, destined to do, what they do. And that's what it is. Now everybody dance.

Justin Timberlake, Hottie!

Even in medicine, though it is easy to know what honey, wine and hellebore, cautery and surgery are, to know how and to whom and when to apply them so as to effect a cure is no less an undertaking than to be a [veterinarian].

Aristotle, 384-322 BC

Going to Kansas for Vet School is like going to the Special Olympics to play chess.

RobReed, BoyGenius

Now you can either stand around here eatin' jambalaya or you can come upstairs and eat my ass!

Brian Kinney, QAF Hottie!
