Internet played a key role in decoding SARS genome.
"The Internet has had a profound impact on how this data has been shared and how scientists have collaborated."
Firstly my sympathies to those effected by the SARS virus, however for those more bioinformatically inclined the following links maybe of interest (click read more for the links): [nodalpoint.org - A bioinformatics weblog]

And as Murphy's Law has it, I cannot find JavaCC at webgain.  Reason: (extracted from www.webgain.com)

Dear valued customer:

As you may be aware, WebGain, Inc. has been in the process of winding down its business during the past several months, and WebGain has already sold ALL of its intellectual property.

Luckily, they provided a link to somewhere else that JavaCC is still available:

Realised that I did not download a copy of the Lucene binary for 1.3 RC1.  While building it from the src, I have to go download JavaCC from webgain.com.

Started to try build the LARM webcrawler from one of the contributions to Lucene.  Quite a number of dependencies.  Anyway, spending one Saturday afternoon on this is not too much time.  Let's see what I can gather by tonight. :)

Phonetix is a small, but useful class-library of phonetic algorithms written entirely in Java. It includes implementations of Soundex, Metaphone, and DoubleMetaphone.

One or two days ago I was decided on giving up on Radio as a blogging tool. Now I am thinking twice.....

Advantages of using Radio:

  • Interface is easy to learn
  • I can keep a copy on my machine
  • I can post to my blog offline.

Disadvantages of using Radio

  • How it works under the hood is still very much a mystery to me
  • I don't feel good not knowing how to tweak it
  • I cannot post to it if I am not with my notebook

Discovered WikiWiki recently, but am getting more confused because I started trying out SnipSnap, which is a combination of blogging and wikiwiki......

I create a new blog at Blogger.com http://totallyconfused.blogspot.com

My radio subscription is expiring, and I don't think I want to renew it.

It's about time for me to renew my subscription to Radio.  However, I am still grappling with the basics of Radio.  Somehow I still am not able to harness the potential of weblogging to my advantage.

One of the disadvantages of JUnit is that the test parameters are usually hard-coded into the JUnit test case. (Or at least in all the sample codes that is the way).  For my purposes, I spent a few days to write my testcases to read from XML file.  Tedious job, and not too elegant, but it works.

However, today I stumbled upon this framework that does what I want to do: JTestCase at http: http://jtestcase.sourceforge.net  Might be spending some time to see whether it fits my needs.

I have been spending a considerable amount of my time on automated testing with Ant and JUnit.  Will be putting up some snippets of my experiences playing with these tools.

Have been playing with the Eclipse IDE from www.eclipse.org.  Interesting tool, but I was not able to make ant run properly from within it.

It was recommended that I keep a stock of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) at home......wonder what my doctor says to that.

Seems like I only remember to post to this weblog whenever I get gout attacks... :(

My doctor prescribed me with a 30-day course of allopurinol at 300mg per day and I began the course last week Monday (31 March 2003).  After several days, I get an acute attack (again!) yesterday (7 Apr).

After doing some more research (and I always do a little more research at each attack), I found that I was supposed to be also prescribed with Colchicine to prevent the onset of acute attacks that usually accompany the commencement of Allopurinol courses.   Also, some references recommends to start with 100mg of Allopurinol per day, so it really puzzles me why I start with 300mg.

What can I do?  I have tried some home remedies too, but it is too early to see any effects.

Anyway, all I know is tonight I went to bed and had to wake up 30 minutes later to log on again to research whether I can take Colchicine together with Allopurinol.   Interesting fact that I found out though, is that the big toe joint is known as the first metatarsophalangeal (read this as meta-tarso-phalange-al) or MTP joint.  Anyway all those medical terms really made me a litte dizzy.  Now I confirm that my decision in my teens to choose computers instead of biology was a right one.....

Back to my research.....
