First AIM exchange between Jack Mancilla and Marc Pierson

JackSonOfJack: I am on AIM as JakSonOfJack

JackSonOfJack: Jack F. Mancilla

JackSonOfJack signed on at 10:54:08 AM.

JackSonOfJack: Howdy. ... Yep it is Jack.

JMarcusPierson:  Jack, How are you this Mother's Day?

JackSonOfJack: I liked the picture of you and your daughter. ... Thanx.

JackSonOfJack: Yes. ... I have to pick up my mom about noon and take her to my sisters for a Mothers Day early dinner. ... And you and your family?

JMarcusPierson:  Could you send me a pros and cons of AIM, Yahoo, and ICQ so that I can get everyone on the project using the same thing?

JackSonOfJack: Sure. ... I use all three.

JMarcusPierson:  Sofia, the 15 month old and I went shopping, prepared a breakfast in bed for Ana and cleaned up the kitchen after myself. All unusual occurrences.

JackSonOfJack: Well you deserve a good pat on the back. ... Job well done!

JMarcusPierson:  I am going to work on a taxonomy for KM with a grid to show what is gained by using Radio and Manila. I will send it to you today.

JackSonOfJack: I will send you the information about th three instant messengers in an email.

JMarcusPierson:  I figured out how categories work last night.

JackSonOfJack: Great. ... Mostly my afternoon is taken up with family, so I will get to it this evening.

JMarcusPierson:  I want to understand the way pictures are managed in Radio. It just eats mine and the are no where to be found.

JackSonOfJack: I think they work great. ... You know all these things change for the better quite quickly at Userland.

JackSonOfJack: I will make a little movie for you. I made another one for someone having a problem with iPhoto.

JMarcusPierson:  I also want to understand Dave's explanation of aggregated weblogs.

JackSonOfJack: http://www.classannual.com/stories/2002/05/08/myMay082002IphotoProblem.html

JackSonOfJack: The aggregated weblog uses the tools for subscribe.

JackSonOfJack: Of those you subscribe they are all posted to the front page of the aggregator.

JackSonOfJack: Excuse me. ... They are posted to another category, one that is used as a front page.

JMarcusPierson:  Hey I really like the little movies. How difficult? What is the process? I suspect that I have all the SW except an appropriate server. I do have Toast Titanium.

JackSonOfJack: I use SnapzPro to take the movies directly off the screen of my computer. I then run the, circa 8 meg, file through Media Cleaner with some settings I created, to generate an 800k file.

JackSonOfJack: I have created a drop shadow frame for the movie so it looks more finished on the screen of the viewers.

JMarcusPierson:  All of my categories have web pages, but little content. You can navigate to them from my 1017584 home page. Could you use the same name as one of these, say the Radio for P2 and then make your logs and mine under that category heading aggregate into one web site?

JackSonOfJack: You do need to shut down most of your programs when you are capturing the screen so that everything is smoother.

JMarcusPierson:  I have media cleaner pro too. Should I get SnapzPro. The thing is to see how easily we could get folks at each P2 site using that technology?

JackSonOfJack: It does not matter what the name of your category or my category name is. ... The aggregator subscribes to the RSS feeds and publishes them to its own category. .. That category name is the name that people from the outside will subscribe to.

JMarcusPierson:  My understanding of RSS feeds is very thin. What does each author need to do in Radio so that we can aggregate by category content created by various Radio clients?

JackSonOfJack: Using SnapzPro is easy. ... Running things through Media Cleaner, is not as easy. ... We need to create an automated cleaner setup on one of the servers.

JackSonOfJack: Basically nothing except to tell you the url of his/her category.

JMarcusPierson:  Doesn't having it on a server require sending huge DV files to the cleaner?

JMarcusPierson:  The devil may be in the details of how "they" tell "you" of his or her category. I had hoped that by using the same category names that all our category feeds could be aggregated and that the Community of Learning facilitator for each category would own that page and clean it up and add comments etc.

JackSonOfJack: Not DV files. ... iMovie,  FinalCut, or SnapzPro can export a QuickTime movie of a quality we find acceptable. ... Then we can use the gems part of Radio and route the QuickTime Movie to the cleaner monitored folder. (which then takes over the automatic process)

JMarcusPierson:  Interesting. Does SnapZPro work on Windows?

JackSonOfJack: All the category feeds that the aggregator collects have a completely different URL. Even if the url ends in the Category Name we need to know the whole thing.

JackSonOfJack: SnapzPro does not work on windows. ... But there is comperable screen capture software for windows.

JMarcusPierson:  Can we "watch" for categories with the same name and then capture the whole URL or will we need to have the URLs sent to us by each end user prior to us being able to aggregate their feeds?

JMarcusPierson:  BTW, how comfortable are you with Windows? With UNIX?

JackSonOfJack: There is nothing for us to watch for. ... I mean, we cannot monitor the entire Internet for urls that end in "specialCategory.rss"

JackSonOfJack: Windows is ok, but something I would rather not live in. Unix is fine.

JMarcusPierson:  In my mind I thought that we would use our own Community Server and that we could watch for anything we chose to?

JackSonOfJack: When it comes to creating our own RCS server, which would certainly narrow things down.

JackSonOfJack: We could then write a script that watched those members and looked for "specialCategory.rss" ... The script could get fairly fancy and automatically add the feed. but I think it would be better to notify someone via email that a new feed existed.

JMarcusPierson:  See, I am naive here. I done have a clue what an RCS server really is or how hard it is. I just figured that every message could be scanned for certain strings in the "header" or something like that and when the official category name comes through that could be "handled" in special ways. Scary? I know a little about a lot but not much depth here.

JMarcusPierson:  Your approach is certainly the one to start with. Simpler to implement, if more prone to human omission.

JackSonOfJack: Every message can be scanned.

JackSonOfJack: That is not built in.

JMarcusPierson:  Scanned by Radio or by and e-mail function. Are you commenting on your approach or mine?

JackSonOfJack: I would think that there should be some sort of quality control on contributors. That is why someone should meet the new contributors.

JackSonOfJack: Your more narrow approach via the RCS server, is what I was commenting on.

JMarcusPierson:  Hey, are you aware of any software that we could use that would allow you to look at and control my computer while I was standing here and only if I gave you permission? We have that in PeaceHealth and it simplifies some help desk calls.

JackSonOfJack: Those people have already been qualified as a partner by being a member of our server.

JackSonOfJack: I use Timbuktu. I use it to control computers in Denmark and other places. ... It is cross platform. I was going to say that I need it on the QT streaming server you were thinking about.

JMarcusPierson:  Ok, it looks like we can start with the E-mail your category url, no matter what you call it, to us and we will aggregate it with like feeds. We can make it more automatic if needed later.

JMarcusPierson:  I used to own a copy years ago. Exactly what should I buy for you to control and view my computer? What exactly is needed for the server?

JackSonOfJack: I think that is a good idea. ... Until we have some volume of flow, it is hard to predict what the flow will be.

JMarcusPierson:  I have never used this instant messaging sw before. Really nice. It even captures our thoughts (cut and paste) better than phone conversations.

JackSonOfJack: You need a copy of Timbuktu for every computer you want controlled. ... They come in various packages, single license, double packs, 5 packs 10 packs. ...

JMarcusPierson:  Can you recommend a digital audio recorder and file format (codec?) for capturing audio for multimedia on the www?

JackSonOfJack: Much Better this way. ... You can reread what we were talking about earlier and figure out what the heck each other really means.

JackSonOfJack: I will have to think about the Audio recorder. We were in the process of looking at a new digital recorder for the school when I left. ... I will check with the Radio Department Head and see what he has to offer.

JMarcusPierson:  I suspect that at least one lead person at each institution will need Timbuktu so that quick fixes can be done with little or less frustration.

JMarcusPierson:  Jack,

JackSonOfJack: When it comes to the actual audio file, We have to think about access now and forever. Right now mp3 should cover all the bases in size and quality.

JMarcusPierson:  Jack, can you send me a CV so I have it for the presentation at IHI?

JMarcusPierson:  Are there hand held recorders that create MP3 audio files?

JackSonOfJack: That is what I want to check with the Radio Department Head. ... We were looking into 3 prototypes that did exactly that.

JackSonOfJack: http://www.classannual.com/jaxPublicDocuments/jaxResume.html

JackSonOfJack: This is just the start of a Resume for Monster.Com. ... I will go ahead and finish it and make it look nicer.

JMarcusPierson:  Nice.

JackSonOfJack: Marc. ... I need to go away and start getting ready to pick up my mom for the day. ...

JMarcusPierson:  Jack, I need to clean up and rejoin the family. I will send a picture so you can see my little distractions (the reason for work and life).

JMarcusPierson:  Great minds. We were typing in the same message with different targets.

JackSonOfJack: Life is Joy. ... Live long and prosper.

JMarcusPierson:  See ya.

JackSonOfJack: later.
