Blog Moving
At current state of the art, this is not something you want to be doing. I suggest that you very carefully select Blog Software so that you rarely have to move your Blog to a different ISP host computer, with changed urls. It will be a humongous hassle for you, and great inconvenience for many people who have links to your blog.
Have you ever uprooted your life and moved to another home, perhaps in another city? It can be a major hassle, and expense. Have you ever moved your e-mail address? ... not all your friends will get the new connection, and the new e-mail software might not work the address book the same way. How about moving your favorite places to another browser? Major hassle & one of the reasons I have been posting some links to my blog ... a page of links for a category can be easier to navigate on my blog than directly from my browser.
- You might want to check out one or more of my collections of links (lots more to come) by various categories that interest me:
-
Sometimes a link to one of my stories gets inexplicably broken (with the title in double quotes not being properly translated into a hyperlink, and I cannot figure out how to fix it on a timely basis. Use this directory of my stories as a backup if need be. http://radio.weblogs.com/0107846/stories
-
Consider value of what I have linked to on other web sites in my various lists illustrated below. Consider loss of that value if and when the places I am linking to, move to some other url, and I not know to update my links. Other people sometimes inform me that one link or another is broken. Sometimes I can find the replacement url, sometimes not. This is an example of how the state of art has a long way to travel, and meanwhile everyone who uses a site that has to move, is inconvenienced.

Moving your weblog is a humongous pain, perhaps because Blog Software is sufficiently new in the e-world, that support to make that easy has not really been developed yet.
- Your old blog has links to pages on that old blog ... those links need redoing so they work on the new host. How much trouble will it be to do that? Does your software come with a script where you can tell it
- Every place that I have a url saying ... whatever/ this string of old text /whatever
- substitute before same/ this new string related to my new blog site /after same
- Now consider how you will notify everyone who linked to your old url, that there is this new url replacing it?
- See my Understand Radio Referers concept - if you have something similar to Radio features and can see all those search engines and other sites linking to yours - they are linked to your old urls. How can you deal with that?
- You can get scripts so that people subscribing to your old RSS are connected to the replacement one. That may or may not work for everyone depending on what software they are using.
- If you do not have the software to do that, can you write software to do that, or find someone to get it for you?
- Or will you keep the old blog (and keep paying for it) and continue the new stuff at the new host? Will your Blog Software let you do that?
You may find that you want to move for any number of reasons.
- The pricing on your blog hosting goes up, more than you willing to pay.
- The advertisements placed on your weblog, as part of the price of having something for free, are not what you care for.
- In my case I have Radio, which has great features, but is limited to 40 meg on their site. This is a bargain at $40.00 per year, but they won't let me have more than 40 meg for a larger sum of money. When my blog grows to their capacity, I will need to start another blog on another site, or move the whole thing bag and baggage to another site.
- There may be features we want that are not forthcoming from our Blog Software and we have to move to get them.
All these reasons contribute to making the best possible selection of Blog Software Types by studying the "Blog Software Perspectives", so as to minimize the times in the future that it is neccessary to uproot our Blog to some other site.
