Items that require registration All the articles, news stories and Internet resources listed in PULSE are available at no cost unless otherwise noted - and this is extremely rare. In order to view some resources, however, you will need to be registered at those sites, and this is always noted in the PULSE annotation. For example, links to Medscape articles always end with "[Viewing Medscape resources requires registration, which is free]. For a long time, Medscape and the New York Times were the only sources regularly featured in PULSE that required registration. During the past year, however, an increasing number of US news sources have moved to registration-based services. For example, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, important sources for PULSE for a long time, now require registration, and wherever possible, an alternate source is selected. Certainly in the case of the Times and Medscape, registration is highly recommended: the Times' news coverage is excellent, and Medscape has a wide variety of resources for those interested in mental health issues. I've been registered at both sites for years now and can personally attest, too, that registration will not lead to unwanted "spam" e-mails. If you do choose to register at a news site linked from PULSE, when you log in, there's usually a check box that allows those sites to "remember" you by storing a small file called a "cookie" on your system. As long as you manage your passwords responsibly (i.e., don't use the same password you use for other important systems or applications), this provides the convenience of not having to log in each time you visit the site - and not having to remember your password. . |
