This Walt Disney production is premised on the escape of an alien criminal to Earth. Lilo, an orphaned young girl living with her older sister, thinking the alien is a dog adopts it and names it Stitch. Other aliens are sent to retrieve Stitch and the story proceeds from there.
I know what you may be thinking. This is standard Disney family values fare. It is, but nobody does it better, than Disney. While it is not quite as good as the Lion King, and the characters do not break out into rousing songs throughout the movie, the script is well conceived and is sophisticated enough to amuse both children and adults who can enjoy the movie on different levels simultaneously. The running Elvis gag is quite funny. The emotional notes hit all the right keys too.
The one thought, that kept recurring to me as I watched this movie, was that this film that was meant for children was better written and executed than most of the garbage Hollywood produces for adult viewing. Its ironic that most of the summer blockbusters are not as intelligent as this kids movie. I[base ']m not sure what Hollywood thinks happens to movie goers as they age but I wish they would stop serving adults the pablum they do and make movies for us which have a message, wit and intelligence. Is that too much to ask?
Lilo and Stitch, thank-you, thank-you very much (say with elvis accent) is a very good family movie.
