MOVIE - THE TUXEDO - $$$$ (OUT 0F 10)
STARRING - JACKIE CHAN, JENNIFER LOVE-HEWITT, JASON ISSACS, RITCHIE COSTER, DEBBIE MAZRA, PETER STORMARE & MIA COTTET.
Jackie Chan plays a hapless taxi-driver who gets recruited to be the chauffeur for a secret agent. Chan dons the boss's magical tuxedo, when the boss gets injured, and gets unwittingly involved in international intrigue.
In a recent interview, Chan stated that he was getting tired of always being cast as a reluctant action hero, and would like to see some more serious roles come his way. Chan is not the only one who's tired. The Tuxedo is a very formalistic action film lacking intensity and rationality. The plot, which is highly contrived, involves an evil villain attempting to corner the world's bottled water supply. While the producers should get credit, for at least attempting not to give us a movie with 100% recycled content, the bottled water conspiracy is so unbelievable that it lacks any credibility.
Occasionally, when the plot device doesn't work, the rest of a movie can be good enough to make you forget about its inherent weaknesses (Red Dragon is a recent example of this). However, in this case Chan's characteristic physical comedy / martial arts is not strong enough to save the day. There's actually both less humour and less action than in most of Chan's movies. The action itself, is not only repetitious but depends on the audience accepting the tuxedo can do what its allowing Chan to do. If you don't buy into that, and I for one didn't, then the action scenes lose any real sense of drama.
The Tuxedo is passable as a video rental but doesn't merit a trip to your local cineplex.
