20th Apr - Non-Orthodox Easter Sunday.
20th Apr - Palm Sunday (ton vayion) Churches are decorated with palm, bay and myrtle. Fasting rules relax and fish is eaten.
21st Apr - Start of Easter week. Monday (Megali Deftera).

22nd Apr - Tuesday (Megali Triti) - Traditionally houses are whitewashed.
23rd Apr - 10.15am - IWOP boat trip from Naoussa to Piso Livadi (weather permitting). Cost: petrol only. Take a picnic - husbands and children welcome. Info: Yvonne 22840-52407.
23rd Apr - Wednesday (Megali Tetarti) - the faithful are anointed with holy oil (efheleo) and oil is brought home to anoint family members and religious icons using sprigs of oregano.
24th Apr - Thursday (Megali Pempti) - After church, traditional red Easter eggs are dyed (kokkina avga). Sweet bread (tsoureki) and cookies (koulourakia) are baked. The evening service is the longest of the Holy Week and afterwards there is an all-night vigil during which flowers are woven around the epitaphios for the following day.
24th Apr - 6pm - Artists’ Rendezvous at Thea Taverna at Punta. Info: Obdulia on 697-3091943 or 22840-22460.
25th Apr - Good Friday (Megali Paraskevi) - offices and shops are closed, flags fly at half-mast and funeral bells toll. The village of Prodromos offers a “paradosiaki revithofageia” with revithia and wine by the church of Aghios Ioannis at around 1pm. Around 10.30pm Marpissa holds the famous parastasis procession and tableaux portraying scenes from the Bible. A parastasis is also held in Marmara and in Prodromos at around 10pm and candlelit processions (with traditional brown candles) take place in Naoussa and Paroikia.
26th Apr - Saturday (Megalo Savvato) - lamb or kid is sacrificed, and mageiritsa soup is made from the innards of the animal. At midnight fireworks announce the arrival of Easter Day and a procession leaves the church, carrying light (white candles) which each person tries to keep alight until they arrive home to burn the sign of the cross over the door and then sit down to the traditional midnight supper.
27th Apr - Easter Sunday (to Agion Pascha) - a simplified version of the previous night’s service is repeated at noon. Families and friends gather to cook the traditional lamb on a spit. Marpissa holds a traditional “Festival of Love” (Eorti tis Agapis) at around 2pm at the football ground. Info: Sophia on 22840-41121. Naoussa also hold a celebration at around 6.30pm at the main square with food and dancing by the Folkdance Group of Naoussa. Info: 22840-51220.
28th Apr - Easter Monday (Deftera Diakainisimou) - all shops are closed. Celebration at the Aghios Georgios Monastery near Marpissa from around 8-10am. Throughout April:

Greek dancing lessons - The Music Dance Group of Naoussa give lessons free of charge at their hall in Naoussa. Weds from 7-8pm for adults, Fri from 3.30 and Sat from 5pm for children. Tel: 22840-52284, email parofolk@otenet.gr.
