Week One: Fireworks

Workshop Description

Learn to create web sites with the most popular web development package among web professionals: Macromedia´s Dreamweaver and Fireworks. This five-week course will work through the building of a site from scratch. Fireworks will be used to create the necessary graphics for the site. With the pieces created and assembled, participants will then use Dreamweaver MX to build a quality, manageable site.

Dreamweaver and Fireworks Websites

Macromedia DevNet: Macromedia launched this site in conjunction with the release of the MX product line. So far they have done a very nice job of updating the content of this site on a weekly basis. You can find articles on just about anything that you might want to learn, organized by application. The only complaint that I have about this site is that it is sometimes difficult to find helpful ideas for beginning users. This site is largely geared towards the professional developer.

Video Tutorials: Getting Started with Dreamweaver MX: These video tutorials, provided by Lynda.com (a very good source, with which I am familiar) and VTC (with which I am not familiar) walk you through the basics of using Dreamweaver MX. A great resource, both for the beginning Dreamweaver user and the long time Dreamweaver user wanting an easy introduction to MX.

The Dreamweaver Exchange: Dreamweaver, since version 3, has been built to be very extensible. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's easy for an average user like you and me to customize Dreamweaver to our needs, but it does mean that those out there with some programming ability and some free time can write "extensions" to Dreamweaver which can be freely shared for everyone's benefit. The exchange is where you can find these extensions. If you are an MX user, you will want to read carefully to ensure that what you are downloading is compatible with MX. A free Macromedia user id is required to download extensions.

DW Zone and FW Zone: These sites are full of information about Dreamweaver and Fireworks. I have found a number of short tutorials here that have shown me how to create cool visual effects in Fireworks or make better use of Dreamweaver. Read book reviews, read what others are doing and contribute by participating in the discussion forums. If you are not finding what you are looking for at Macromedia's website, this is the next place to look.
