Russian swimmer Dmitri Komornikov has set a new world record in the men's 200 meters breaststroke race at the Mare Nostrum meet in Barcelona, Spain.

Komornikov finished the race in 2:9.52, 0.45 second faster than the old mark set by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima in October 2002.

Organizers said it was the first world record set in the Sant Andreu pool in Barcelona. The Spanish City hosts the world swimming championships next month, but the event will be held at a specially constructed venue at the Palau Sant Jordi.
