QuickTime 6: what's new & might be helpful for authors

QuickTime 6 is available from Apple as a public preview for web developers to test out. Comments about the new features are in green.
  New Feature Value

  • Instant-on eliminates the delays in viewing streaming video for high-speed net connections.
Much more responsive experience will make streaming more like TV/radio
  • MPEG4 support provides high quality video to a variety of devices from PDAs to PCs.
MPEG4 has the potential to become a major new standard for delivery of audio/video content across a host of devices.
  • EXIF-tagged JPEG and TIF files now better supported by QuickTime

  • AppleScript improvements: the QuickTime Player is now a recordable application. Also, there are now extensions to the AppleScript Export syntax for exporting FastStart QTVRs, MPEG4s, and QuickTime media links.
QuickTime authors will be able to automate more of their workflow
  • Cubic QTVR previews start displaying sooner
Once most people have upgraded to QT6, cubics will seem more responsive

Another public preview from Apple is the QuickTime Broadcaster. Anyone with a Mac OS X system on the net can use this software to become an internet video or audio station. No per-stream fees makes this a great value for cost-sensitive organizations.
