Am I Too Late?
I fear I may be too late, although I guess I have one more day to
write my "Year in Review" before we're a full week into
2003. So here goes.
In short, 2002 kicked ass. Here are the highlights, in rough chronological
order.
- We got settled into a new house.
- We had a great springtime housewarming / birthday party. It marked
the first time since before starting college that I had been at a party with more than thirty people in a house where the party actually ended without the
cops showing up.
- We got rid of the mice that had taken up residence in the
crawlspace and were threating to invade the basement.
- We had adventures in gardening.
- The deer didn't eat any flowers.
- I started Silverback
Software, LLC and started writing software in spare time.
- I stopped (well, mostly) paying attention to the stock market.
- We started building a garage.
- We hit snags and stopped building a garage.
- We got married, had a wonderful wedding and a fun honeymoon.
- I got laid off. This was a bummer until I realized that I was free
to work for myself full time. It was a bummer again when I realized
how much my wife would be stressed out by having to support me in the
lifestyle to which I have become accustomed.
- It was fantastic when she said she'd support me in my
endeavor.
- We finally got approval to continue with the garage.
- The ground was frozen before we could do any more work. (Maybe next
year I will be able to be ecstatic about not having to scrape my
car. 2003/2004 will probably be the warmest, driest winter on
record.)
- The mice still haven't returned.
- I hired Silverback's first employee. Along with all the things
that I gain by bringing someone else on board comes the bonus that I
no longer feel awkward saying "we" on the Silverback
website.
- My wife bought a truck.
- We celebrated two Thanksgivings and two
Christmases. (Technically, that was one Festivus,
one Thanksgiving, a Festivus Part Two, and a Christmas.)
- We played bumper pool and Atari in my best friends'
basement on New Year's Eve. It was like high school New Year's
Eves. Only this time we had alcohol and spouses. So it was much more
fun.
What about the year ahead? I'll make just one prediction,
Nostradamus-style:
vague enough that I have a decent chance of hitting something spot-on.
In the Sun Month the sky will shed tears,
for there will be great effusion of blood.
Fire and sword did not know how to accomplish:
the lesser one will appear as victor.
In an effort to keep this upbeat, there will be no comments on 1) that place, 2) that thing dealing with resources, wants, and the respective scarcities of the two, 3) those events, or 4) that guy. Yes, this is in keeping with the vagueness.
But I've got to say that I'm really looking forward to the rest of
2003. I'm excited about the prospects for Silverback. I'm excited
about our garage1. Our springtime party will be happening again. We
should have opportunities for travel sometime during the year, although
we haven't picked any destinations. I've also got some
"local travel" that I'd like
to do.
Resolutions? The same as everybody else: 1) exercise more, 2) drink more beer, 3) gain ten pounds, 4) get my weblog to validate as XHTML2 and 5) stay off the crack.
1 Note that a garage is largely an excuse to acquire tools.
2 Note that this might require abandoning Radio. Maybe that's what is really in my future:
In the third month, a challenger rises: Being recognized and understood, it replaces the second. With much consternation, the Names adjust and return to their rightful place.
