"It Can't Happen Here". "Americans have often wondered where the Germans were able to recruit all the people who staffed the Gestapo and the SS. The fact is, however, that sociopaths, sociopath sympathizers, the weak-kneed, and the easily-led form a standard distribution across all societies, in all times. We have just as many in America now as the Germans did in the 1930s. Maybe even more, since Americans have been programmed by the public schools and the mass media for several generations more than were the Germans of that time. Your local TIPS snitch might report that you "fail to display sufficient respect for authority." Or maybe he'll write down that you "laugh upon hearing the phrase 'homeland security'." Think I'm kidding?

The popular response to the TIPS program is proof that the time is now right for the creepy-crawlies to emerge from under their rocks. That neighbor who's got a kid, and a dog, and plays ball of a Saturday may have exactly the same dark side as the German who always politely shopped at a Jewish deli, but then broke its windows when Kristalnacht came.

One scary and hysterical government measure that hasn't been shelved was the activation of 300 Army National Guard tank battalions as part of a homeland defense force, as part of a strategy calling for the domestic use of U.S. military forces. Reuters reported that, in his July 20 speech, Bush said that tank battalions "will serve in the homeland defense role within the United States." I'd like to know how, exactly, tanks will be employed within the U.S.

The reactivity, and utter lack of principle, of the Baby Bush regime is underlined by the creation of a Department of Homeland Security. And that...entirely apart from the fact that its $37 billion budget will compete with the FBI, CIA, NSA and other bloated and dangerous bureaucracies as Praetorian Guard wannabees."

"Dear Santa, I hear the North Pole is melting...". "In fact, you know the immutability of Nature's laws better than I do, since you're sitting up there on a melting sheet of ice that's thinned 40% since the 1970s. By mid-century, Santa, you'll need a summer houseboat -- for you, the elves, and several thousand homeless polar bears.

And apparently, there's not a snowball's chance in Bangladesh that we humans are going to do much about it. Did you see the news from India, Santa, about the latest international climate negotiations conference?

"Experts espousing the views of industry were thrilled with the shift in New Delhi," said the New York Times on November 3, 2002. The "shift" was this: the world is basically giving up on trying to stop or slow down global warming. "Industry" (not all industry -- some industry makes the "Nice" list) was thrilled because they won't have to invest in innovation, pay carbon taxes, reinvent their products, convert to zero-emissions energy systems.

All the serious talk now, said the Times, is about adapting to the inevitable."

Significance of Friday the 13th. "In 1099 AD the Roman Catholic Church - via the now infamous bloody religious wars of the Christian Crusades - regained control over the holy city of Jerusalem. However, the lands surrounding Jerusalem were still in the hands of the Moslems. A warrior order of the Roman Catholic Church eventually banded together that was allegedly for the purpose of protecting Christian travelers on their way to the holy city of Jerusalem. The warrior order was officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1118 AD, and they were then provided with a headquarters building located on Mount Moriah. This building was located on a site traditionally thought to be the former Temple of King Solomon. Thus, the warrior order became known as the Knights of the Temple, or the Knights Templar.

To make a very long (but incredibly interesting) story short, Jacques Demolay became the Grand Master of the Knights Templar in around 1293 AD During the two hundred years of their existence within the Roman Catholic Church, the Knights Templar had grown into a rather rich and powerful political force to be reckoned with. During Demolay's stay in office as Grand Master, the Templars had increasingly grown in disfavor with the current pope, Pope Clement V, and with the King of France, Phillip the Fair.

In 1307 AD the pope and the king arranged for the Templars to meet with them for a "friendly convocation" in Paris, France. Jacques Demolay was arrested on Friday, October the 13th, 1307 AD (Old Style). Seven years later, in 1314 AD, Jacques DeMolay was burned at the stake for the crime of church heresy. Legend continues on that before Demolay died - he cursed the king and pope to die within the year. Fact is... the king and the pope did die in the next year."
