Two Traditional Media Views on Blogging as Journalism

"Weblogs are journalism,"says Joan Connell, executive producer for Opinions and Communities at MSNBC.com. "They can be used to great effect in reporting an unfolding story and keeping readers informed."

"CNN.com prefers to take a more structured approach to presenting the news," the spokesperson said. "We do not blog."

The Register Blasts Bloggers' 'Googlewash' of 'Second Superpower' Term

(Just you try to get that many apostrophes/quote marks in a headline.)

The Register writer Andrew Orlowski is none too impressed with the "techno-utopian," "sappy," "mound of feel-good styrofoam peanuts" essay on the 'second superpower" by Jim Moore. Orlowski says bloggers like Moore have, in just 42 days, managed an Orwellian word-meaning change from an original coinage by Patrick Tyler in The New York Times. (Where Tyler, to my reading, meant world opinion is the other superpower.) Greenpeace went on to use Tyler's idea, as did Kofi Annan (Reg. Req'd link).

Now here's the important bit. Look what the phrase "Second Superpower" produces on Google now. . . Moore's essay is right there at the top.

. . . Although it took millions of people around the world to compel the Gray Lady to describe the anti-war movement as a "Second Superpower", it took only a handful of webloggers to spin the alternative meaning to manufacture sufficient PageRank? to flood Google with Moore's alternative, neutered definition.

. . . To all intents and purposes, the original meaning has been erased. Obliterated, in just seven weeks.

Orlowski, who seems not to be the Google fan I am, offers a new Googleverb:

The phrase "greenwash" will be familiar to many of you: it's where a spot of judicious marketing paint is applied to something decidedly rotten, transforming it into something that looks as if it's wholesome and radical new, but which is essentially unchanged.

This is the first Googlewash we've encountered. 42 days, too.

"Stupid White Men" Back At #1, "Bowling for Columbine " Breaks New Records

April 7, 2003

Dear friends,

It appears that the Bush administration will have succeeded in colonizing Iraq sometime in the next few days. This is a blunder of such magnitude -- and we will pay for it for years to come. It was not worth the life of one single American kid in uniform, let alone the thousands of Iraqis who have died, and my condolences and prayers go out to all of them.

So, where are all those weapons of mass destruction that were the pretense for this war? Ha! There is so much to say about all this, but I will save it for later.

What I am most concerned about right now is that all of you – the majority of Americans who did not support this war in the first place – not go silent or be intimidated by what will be touted as some great military victory. Now, more than ever, the voices of peace and truth must be heard.

I have received a lot of mail from people who are feeling a profound sense of despair and believe that their voices have been drowned out by the drums and bombs of false patriotism. Some are afraid of retaliation at work or at school or in their neighborhoods because they have been vocal proponents of peace. They have been told over and over that it is not "appropriate" to protest once the country is at war, and that your only duty now is to "support the troops."

Can I share with you what it's been like for me since I used my time on the Oscar stage two weeks ago to speak out against Bush and this war? I hope that, in reading what I'm about to tell you, you'll feel a bit more emboldened to make your voice heard in whatever way or forum that is open to you.

When "Bowling for Columbine" was announced as the Oscar winner for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards, the audience rose to its feet. It was a great moment, one that I will always cherish. They were standing and cheering for a film that says we Americans are a uniquely violent people, using our massive stash of guns to kill each other and to use them against many countries around the world. They were applauding a film that shows George W. Bush using fictitious fears to frighten the public into giving him whatever he wants. And they were honoring a film that states the following:

§ The first Gulf War was an attempt to reinstall the dictator of Kuwait;

§ Saddam Hussein was armed with weapons from the United States;

§ The American government is responsible for the deaths of a half-million children in Iraq over the past decade through its sanctions and bombing.

That was the movie they were cheering, that was the movie they voted for, and so I decided that is what I should acknowledge in my speech.

And, thus, I said the following from the Oscar stage:

"On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan (from Canada), I would like to thank the Academy for this award.

I have invited the other Documentary nominees on stage with me. They are here in solidarity because we like non-fiction. We like non-fiction because we live in fictitious times. We live in a time where fictitious election results give us a fictitious president. We are now fighting a war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fiction of duct tape or the fictitious 'Orange Alerts,' we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush; shame on you.

And, whenever you've got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, you're time is up."

Halfway through my remarks, some in the audience started to cheer. That immediately set off a group of people in the balcony who started to boo. Then those supporting my remarks started to shout down the booers. The L. A. Times reported that the director of the show started screaming at the orchestra "Music! Music!" in order to cut me off, so the band dutifully struck up a tune and my time was up. (For more on why I said what I said, you can read the op-ed I wrote for the L.A. The next day -- and in the two weeks since -- the right-wing pundits and radio shock jocks have been calling for my head. So, has all this ruckus hurt me? Have they succeeded in "silencing" me? Well, take a look at my Oscar "backlash":

§ On the day after I criticized Bush and the war at the Academy Awards, attendance at "Bowling for Columbine" in theaters around the country went up 110% (source: www.DailyVariety/BoxOfficeMojo.com).

§ The following weekend, the box office gross was up a whopping 73% (Variety).

§ It is now the longest-running consecutive commercial release in America, 26 weeks in a row and still thriving.

§ The number of theaters showing the film since the Oscars has INCREASED, and it has now bested the previous box office record for a documentary by nearly 300%.

§ Yesterday (April 6), "Stupid White Men" shot back to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

§ This is my book's 50th week on the list, 8 of them at number one, and this marks its fourth return to the top position, something that virtually never happens.

§ In the week after the Oscars, my website was getting 10-20 million hits A DAY (one day we even got more hits than the White House!).

§ The mail has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive (and the hate mail has been hilarious!).

§ In the two days following the Oscars, more people pre-ordered the video for "Bowling for Columbine" on www.Amazon.com than the video for the Oscar winner for Best Picture, "Chicago".

§ In the past week, I have obtained funding for my next documentary, and I have been offered a slot back on television to do an updated version of "TV Nation"/ "The Awful Truth."

I tell you all of this because I want to counteract a message that is told to us all the time -- that, if you take a chance to speak out politically, you will live to regret it. It will hurt you in some way, usually financially. You could lose your job. Others may not hire you. You will lose friends. And on and on and on.

Take the Dixie Chicks. I'm sure you've all heard by now that, because their lead singer mentioned how she was ashamed that Bush was from her home state of Texas, their record sales have "plummeted" and country stations are boycotting their music. The truth is that their sales are NOT down. This week, after all the attacks, their album is still at #1 on the Billboard country charts and, according to Entertainment Weekly, on the pop charts during all the brouhaha, they ROSE from #6 to #4.

In the New York Times, Frank Rich reports that he tried to find a ticket to ANY of the Dixie Chicks' upcoming concerts but he couldn't because they were all sold out. (To read Rich's column from yesterday's New York Times, "Bowling for Kennebunkport," go here:

He does a pretty good job of laying it all out and talks about my next film and the impact it could potentially have.)

Their song, "Travelin' Soldier" (a beautiful anti-war ballad) was the most requested song on the Internet last week. They have not been hurt at all -- but that is not what the media would have you believe.

Why is that? Because there is nothing more important now than to keep the voices of dissent -- and those who would dare to ask a question -- SILENT. And what better way than to try and take a few well-known entertainers down with a pack of lies so that the average Joe or Jane gets the message loud and clear: "Wow, if they would do that to the Dixie Chicks or Michael Moore, what would they do to little ol' me?” In other words, “Shut the f--- up.”

And that, my friends, is the real point of this film that I just got an Oscar for – how those in charge use FEAR to manipulate the public into doing whatever they are told.

Well, the good news -- if there can be any good news this week -- is that not only have neither I nor others been silenced, we have been joined by millions of Americans who think the same way we do. Don't let the false patriots intimidate you by setting the agenda or the terms of the debate.

Don't be defeated by polls that show 70% of the public in favor of the war. Remember that these Americans being polled are the same Americans whose kids (or neighbor's kids) have been sent over to Iraq. They are scared for the troops and they are being cowed into supporting a war they did not want -- and they want even less to see their friends, family, and neighbors come home dead. Everyone supports the troops returning home alive and all of us need to reach out and let their families know that.

Unfortunately, Bush and Co. are not through yet. This invasion and conquest will encourage them to do it again elsewhere. The real purpose of this war was to say to the rest of the world, "Don't Mess with Texas - If You Got What We Want, We're Coming to Get It!"

This is not the time for the majority of us who believe in a peaceful America to be quiet. Make your voices heard. Despite what they have pulled off, it is still our country.

The current issue of Wired mag includes a Wi-Fi primer, bundled as a 60-page mini-magazine that pops out to keep or, better yet, pass around. UnWired features articles on understanding the Wi-Fi landscape and setting up your own network. BoingBoing regular Xeni Jardin and I were both so enthusiastic about UnWired that we contributed two articles each.

Xeni explains our use of the radio spectrum as it is, and as it could be. I put aside my usual snobbery about doing how-to articles and business landscapes to hammer out a long getting started primer written with my family in Maine in mind. It lists specific products and services - Linksys, AirPort, Starbucks, Surf and Sip - that I know will work for those who follow the instructions, yet won't bankrupt families that can't rush out to buy a new laptop. Or businesses that can't splurge on T1 infrastructure. I also list "25 Companies to Watch," a cocktail party primer rather than an investment guide. Most of the blog-reading crowd will find much of this familiar material, so here's a suggestion: Buy Wired for Steve Silberman's Matrix story on the cover, but yank out UnWired and give it to someone who hasn't yet cut the Ethernet cord. In what promises to be a good thing for MacMania attendees, Geek Cruises' Perl Whirl II cruise conference, now underway, features the first ship-wide wireless Internet access for attendees.

This network will allow attendees to download conference files, communicate with speakers and other attendees, keep informed of any change in conference venues and participate in activities using state-of-the-art groupware. Plus, the wireless Internet link allows attendees to surf the Web, send and receive e-mail and transfer files to their own laptops using the ship's satellite connection.

I know that Feedster has quite a few "war blogs" regularly being indexed by Feedster -- I wrote the automatic classification routines for the War Filter but it was unclear to me how many, if any, "peace blogs" were in there. So via a pointer from Doc, I found Mark Pilgrim's list of Peace Blogs and made sure that all of the ones for which he points out RSS feeds are now indexed by Feedster. Roughly 1/3 were already being indexed so that's something but I thought it best if they all were.

Note: I'm not getting into the whole war discussion here at all but I do think it important that a search engine cover both sides of things.

Wireless at Sea: A Report from the MacMania Alaska Cruise

On the recent Geek Cruises' MacMania conference, I mushed dogs, watched glaciers calve, and ate like a pig. But one of the best parts of the event was the convivial area network (CAN?) in the ship's library and nearby games room, made possible through Wi-Fi networking and a satellite link-up back to the Internet. (Another good part: I somehow lost two pounds. Must have been all the presenting.)

When Neil Bauman, CEO and "Captain" of Geek Cruises, and Bernie Dunham of MousTech.Net (no Web site) -- his one-man consulting firm, partnered to deliver wireless access during the conferences, they originally planned to offer it ubiquitously.

Dunham said, "The original project scope was to provide wireless not only over the conference center decks, but we were going to try to get all the cabin areas." After considering the cost and social impact, however, they decided to limit coverage to conference rooms and public areas.

Last fall's Perl Whirl was a free test of the wireless network system for Bauman, Dunham, and the attendees, many of whom said they would have liked to have access in their cabins. "I don't think so!" Bauman said. "Then they'll spend their time in their rooms."

Expensive Service

The cost to attendees and speakers for Wi-Fi access was $100 if paid early, and $150 aboard ship. Bauman said he was subsidizing the service, which cost him $200 per user because of high fees paid to the onboard Internet concessionaire.

WiFi, cruises, photography and a new Web site and Weblog to check out

As I've written previously, I'm getting involved in promoting the development of 802.11 on board cruise ships. I makes a lot of sense. I'm working with Bernie Dunham, a long-time IT expert who provided the WiFi infrastructure for Geek Cruises and its most recent MacMania cruise. Bernie will continue to provide WiFi for Geek Cruises.

Bernie has just posted a new Web site for his company, MOUStech.net, which includes information about his experience in WiFi and seminars that will use 802.11 on cruise ships. MOUStech.net's business is providing WiFi for ships as well as coordinating appropriate seminars and workshops for cruise ships.

I'm going to be presenting a keynote address or two as well as conducting a multi-day seminar about wireless as part of the Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's mammoth "Explorer of the Seas" cruise ship. (Want to become a sponsor? Contact me: reiter@wirelessinternet.com)

There will be several seminars presented by different companies and speakers occurring during the Eastern Caribbean cruise, which is October 5 - 12, 2002. A similar program (without me) will be for the Western Caribbean, October 12 - 19, 2002.

The MOUStech.net Web site is recent, and it's very definitely a work in progress. Bernie also has started a MOUStech.Info Radio Userland Weblog, where there is more information about what he is doing professionally and personally.

Bernie is spearheading the efforts of implementing WiFi on ships, and I'm kind of tagging along on his coattails. When you begin to look at offering wireless data on ships, you begin to see many, many interesting -- and useful possibilities. I wrote last Thursday about how Philippe Kahn was sending photos, via satellite, of his sail boat race. Wireless and photography will be a big business.

Wireless photography

Cruise ships should offer a variety of wireless and wireless photography services. Offer passengers an opportunity to have their own photo page for posting images. Offer passengers Weblogs to post their thoughts. These can be teriffic "electronic postcards." Actually they can be more like electronic letters back home, and passengers don't have to wait until their mail is posted on land.

Sell disposable (non-digital) cameras, develop the film and scan the images into the photo page and/or Weblog. Sell cheap (or not-so-cheap!) digital cameras on board and offer classes about digital photography and about wireless. (Disposable cameras already are sold on cruise ships; I don't know whether digital cameras are now being sold.)

Create splash pages for every cruises -- for the passenger's photo page and Weblog as well as for the ship's own information -- and sell advertising space on the pages to merchants in ports. Obviously, you need to be careful and intelligent about where and how to include advertising. Maybe everyone gets a photo page and Weblog that's free -- with advertising -- or ad-free pages for a small fee.

I e-mailed Bernie about the possibility of establishing photo kiosks on ships, and he said he previously discussed the idea with at least one conference organizer.

There's a business here!

I tell you folks, there are valid business models for using technology to provide passengers -- and merchants (on the ships and on land) -- with valuable and fun services. I'm getting involved in this. Good economy or bad -- there are opportunities to serve the public and generate income. Only the idiots (i.e., many financial analysts) dismiss wireless communications today.

But you must ensure that all the links in the wireless data value chain are sufficiently strong!

Corresponding with Bernie has gotten some of my creative juices flowing, and he certainly is spearheading the WiFi-on-cruises concept. It seems, too, that Weblogger extraordinaire and Linux Journal senior editor Doc Searls provided Bernie with some inspiration.

802.11 in libraries

Bernie does more volunteer work than anyone I know. One of his many projects is installing WiFi in libraries, and you may read about it in his Weblog. WiFi in libraries -- public and corporate -- makes a lot of sense, and I'd like to see more of it. Bernie posts links to other sites with some good information about WiFi in libraries. Well worth checking out.

Wi-Fi on Campus II

Pete Kruckenberg sent me a reference to a Wired story on Wi-Fi on campus after reading my recent article. Pete says "Just like any other technology, Wi-Fi requires that the classroom dynamics and methods be changed to incorporate and use it. " One of the points that the article makes, and with which I agree wholeheartedly, is that there's no telling what will happen on campus when you give everyone access to ubiquitous wireless networking. College students are incredibly innovative and, contrary to what they commonly believe, have a lot of time on their hands to play around with the technology. Just one small example: last week when I was at the BYU CS department, there was a robot running around the third floor. It was using the building Wi-Fi for access, not some special connection. Its just part of the infrastructure that researchers count on now.
