This is wierd, I just discovered this guy Al Macintyre who started using Radio about a week before I did (from what I can tell) (Al if this is incorrect please do not let my ignorance offend you). It seems like he is reading my mind.

This post rambled so I turned it into a story. Click here to read on.

More Radio Reading

Enabling Category-Specific Stories it looks long but thorough.

Further Reading

Jotting this down so I don't lose it: http://www.xmlrpc.com/howTheWebBugSimulatorWorks

This topic is so rich I will have to reread a few times to really absorb.

What I don't get:

  • the 1-pixel gif. Where in the XML feed is the gif inserted? Why does this gif help track referers and hits? [update 8/14/2002 review this]:
    • Why is it called a Web Bug Simulator?

In Web pages, a common practice is to add a small image that makes it possible to track hits, referers and rankings. There is no equivalent feature for XML-based content. So this new feature for Radio 8 simulates a Web Bug, which is where it gets its silly name.
  • are the scan results described here referring to the subscriber's scan?
  • is this the source of those "Please Notify" items in my Events report? [update 8/14/2002]: "Please Notify" question from Radio msg boards.

What I do get:

This week's Radio accomplishments:

  • the google box on the lower left,
  • the hotlist updates on the lower right,
  • static links to two categories in home page template.

To do:

  • how do I determine where the main page template is used vs. the home page template?
  • Research the concept of "upstreaming" and "working offline"
    • can I test changes to my home page while working offline?
    • can I verify my images are visible from the internet while working offline?
    • does one need to turn off upstreaming, then working offline, vice versa?
    • what is the difference between upstreaming and working offline? ooh-ooh he knows
  • factor out navigator links into a blogroll I might need this and this
    • dependency: research blogrolling etiquette
    • dependency: make sure you know what a blogroll is a clue

Wishlist item: glossary of Userland slang, jargon, terms not found in a dictionary. Could be expanded to a general glossary viewable alphabetically or by category (Userland jargon, PDA jargon. etc.)

XML format could include

-term (word being described)

-definition

-category (userland, pda)

-alternate spellings [optional]

-origin (who coined the term) [optional]

etc.

update: add this term (and its definition, if found) grok usage: "I wrote a technical background piece for people who grok XML"

update 2: Blue Sky Radio, or A Klog Apart, or Phill Wolff (these three are the same people FWIK) saw this post and provided a very thorough answer. Thanks, Phill (is that is your name).
