David Pescovitz:

When my wife was a small child, she'd sometimes pick up the spoons to sit in with her great uncle's bluegrass band in Kentucky. Every so often, I can still get her to give me a roll or two. Now I'm going to try to learn by following the directions on this site. Link (via MetaFilter)This doesn't take me back to relatives in childhood, but rather to the many performances of Split Enz I saw throught the 70s and 80s in which Noel Crombie took spoon solos.

Kissing can alleviate hay-fever, according to a Japanese hospital's study. The theory is that kissing relaxes you and therefore slows histamine production:
The researchers asked a total of 24 couples, where both partners suffered from hay fever, to spend 30 minutes kissing.
Blood samples were taken before and after to compare levels of histamine, and results showed that after the kissing session levels of the chemical were significantly reduced.
This was not found to be the case, however, when the experiment was repeated with cuddling but no kissing, with no change in histamine levels found.
I'm a big fan of the kiss. I posted about kissing once before. It proved to be my most commented post. Admittedly it was about me kissing men. Also, I omitted to mention the case of my dear friend and musical soulmate, Chris Finnen. We typically greet like long parted lovers, with tears, laughter, hugs and kissing.

A new species of monkey identified in Tanzania's highlands last year is an even more remarkable find than thought - it is a new genus of animal.
Yes, you read that right; a new genus!

A Harvard study has found that over half of those taking
"virginity pledges" had broken them within a year...
Virginity pledges are no match for hormones. That's the finding
of a Harvard study conducted by researcher Janet Rosenbaum. She
analyzed data in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent
Health, the only government-sponsored study that asks...
But the US government still funds abstinence-based programs as a substitute for safe sex education. Madness.

A student was suspended from school for passing out leaflets
condemning homosexuals...
The difficult part about free speech is defending it even for
people who are morally reprehensible, hateful and disgusting.
And the difficult part about church/state separation is not only
ensuring that the state doesn't advance religion, but also...
This article is great; it has some excellent ideas for protest, such as passing out leaflets condemning people with red hair or with the terrible affliction of lefthandedness. And more pointedly, it suggests targeting other biblical sins such as touching a woman while she is menstruating, or wearing garments of more than one fibre.

NewsFactor - In the struggle between Apple and Microsoft for the minds and hearts of computer users, clearly Microsoft has come out ahead. Despite its second-place finish in the operating-system race, however, Apple continues to fight and win key popularity battles on the secondary hardware and music fronts.
This is a more or less objective side to side comparison of two cultures, saying calmly and coolly what most Mac users have known for years.

Mr. Irresponsible's Bad Advice : How to Rip the Lid Off Your Id and Live Happily Ever After, is ostensibly a humor book, but it really speaks to the lizard brain in all of us that wants to squash annoying people like bugs. That it's also hilarious is an added bonus. Just don't follow his advice, unless you want to end up in prison, or worse.
