Excellent Christmas music

I wear some Specialized gear. The people of Specialized are hosting this musical piece. It's The Nutcracker Suite, played entirely on bicycle parts.

WayLay.

The pros and cons of dowsing.

I'm not sure why this is so compelling, and seems to explain so much of my life's experience.

Nutcracker Suite performed by bicycle parts

I wear a Specialized bicycle helmet. I also wear a Specialized jersey most often.
Specialized have come up with a wonderful eChristmas card.
This is a very cool Christmas (for American sensibilities they call it "holiday") Flash card with an excerpt of the Nutcracker Suite (you know, Sugar Plum Fairy and all that), played entirely on bicycle parts.
It uses plucked spokes, gear noises, clicking shifters, clipping pedals, turning spokes, and much more.
Check it out here.

churchly

Now, I'm very familiar with the word ecclesiastical, but I've never heard the word "churchly"!

A Lifestyle Distinct: The Muxe of Mexico

In the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, the local Zapotec people have made room for "muxes"[~]men who consider themselves women.

Tolerance is a good thing.

iBreath to tackle drink driving

THE latest weapon in the war against drink driving is a breathalyser linked to an iPod or iPhone.

It goes on to say you should never rely on these things the police say, but

'Vince George, manager of Australian manufacturer Drivecheck, said his company's devices exceeded Australian standards and needed regular recalibration. "Our hand-held products turn off after six months and require users to send it back to our professional labs for recalibration to get it working again," he said.'

All the same, when I get my iPhone, I gotta get me one of these these.

Angry borded octopus goes wilding" class="weblogItemTitle">Angry bored octopus goes wilding

Otto the Octopus, a resident of Sea Star Aquarium in Coburg, Germany, is bored because the aquarium's closed for the winter -- so he's making mischief. First he squirted an overhead light until it shorted out, and now he's taken to juggling the hermit crabs.

"Once we saw him juggling the hermit crabs in his tank, another time he threw stones against the glass damaging it. And from time to time he completely re-arranges his tank to make it suit his own taste better - much to the distress of his fellow tank inhabitants."

A Planetary Smiley

Venus, Jupiter and the Moon

stellarium

update: just saw this link that pre-warned about this:

"However the cosmic cheeriness will be a fleeting affair. Another smiley face will not grin over Australia until the early hours of July 21, 2036"

I was viewing this over the ocean last night; the photo does not quite convey how impressively bright it was.

Swiss vote to allow heroin prescriptions

Switzerland has long had a reputation for looking after the health of its drug addicts.

The whole notion of drugs as a criminal issue, or worse yet, something to fight a war over, is unconscionable and stupid. Drug addiction is firstly a health issue. Criminalising drugs causes crime. I knew the Swiss were basically sensible. Odd, but sensible.
