Crypto shenanigans
Justin Mason has a round-up of the coverage of the Chalabi/Iran/crypto story on this weblog, plus some analysis of his own. Justin mentions the Irish angle on the story - Ireland apparently used Crypto AG machines to encrypt internal discussions about the Anglo-Irish agreement in the mid-80s, the diplomatic equivalent of playing poker with your cards facing outwards. Then the Crypto AG story broke, via the Iranian intervention. Then apparently, during the Good Friday negotiations in the 1990s, Ireland sent its documents between Dublin and the London embassy the old-fashioned way, in diplomatic bags in the cockpits of Aer Lingus Dublin-London flights, guarded by the pilot who would personally hand the bags to the Irish attaché at the far side.
