Staff from the Illinois State Library is asking the staff of Illinois libraries to update their library's listing in ELI, a directory database for Illinois libraries that includes hours libraries are open, specialties, etc. In particular, they would like participating libraries to add emails and URLs. CLS member libraries should contact Teri at CLS if they need a new login and password.

Online Library Instruction: Create a Virtual Search

Learn to create more interactive online environments for teaching information literacy skills. In this workshop you'll use Flash MX to create an online database search demonstration. The demonstration will allow students to move at their own pace, and will require them to type searches correctly before they can move on to the the next step. No prior experience with Flash is necessary. Rather than teach all details of the software, we'll focus strictly on the features and methods most useful for library instruction.

CLS to offer Digital Project Management course:

Class Description:
This workshop is for decision makers and staff who are charged with considering a plunge into local digital conversion of collections. It will provide a basic overview of the complex, interconnected tasks and processes involved in creating digital resources -- from selection, funding, and staffing, through metadata creation, web site development, and archiving. Outsourcing versus in-house production will be compared. We'll survey features of the important building blocks for digital resources, including scanning techniques, ocr, and assets management, but we won't delve deeply into technical details or provide hands-on demonstrations. We will review current standards and best practices, and consider criteria for sustainable, usable digital resources. Experience with scanning equipment or digital cameras is helpful but not required.

Designing Creative Learning Environments

The first in a series of seminars to honor our colleague Sharon Hogan, late University Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Designing Creative Learning Environments will focus on a specific process to aid in the re-conceptualization and design of academic library learning environments, a topic of great interest to Sharon. Led by well-known library space consultant, Aaron Cohen, participants will learn and engage in a process that allows them to think freshly about the way space is analyzed and utilized. You will learn about cutting edge technologies as well as more modestly priced, but high impact, solutions to library space problems related to creating flexible and dynamic learning spaces.

CLS Staff to Present at the ILA Conference:

CLS staff will be some of the many great speakers at next week's ILA Conference.

Kathryn Deiss's presentation "The Art of Mentoring, or Move Over, Obi-Wan" is scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 as a pre-conference.

Veronda Pitchford will be moderating a pre-conference with Emily Guss of the Chicago Public Library on Tuesday, September 24. Their pre-conference is a rockin' bus tour called "Exploring Library Service in and to Ethnic Communities Bus Tour." Veronda also will be sharing her experiences working and visiting South Africa's libraries as part of the panel for the program, entitled "Masifunde Sonke and Bibliotecas Para Todos: Building A Nation of Readers," on Friday afternoon, September 27.

Teri Ross Embrey will help you sync up to the latest in technology as part of two panel presentations. The first, entitled "From Pocket to Palm: Hotsync Yourself to the Latest Information on Handheld Computers and Libraries" with Jenny Levine and Tom Peters, is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, September 25. The second program, entitled "The Forecast for Tomorrow Is... Top Tech Trends in Illinois and Beyond" with Tom Peters and Matt Gullett, will occur mid-day on Thursday, September 26.

"The EPIC (Empowering Paraprofessionals in CALL) committee was formed to provide professional development and networking opportunities along with training programs geared specifically for the library community.

To generate interest and kick off the 2002-2003 committee year, EPIC is hosting a brown bag lunch on November 14, 2002, at the Chicago Library System, 224 North Michigan, Suite 400, Chicago, Illinois at 12:00 p.m., to acquaint paraprofessionals with CALL (Chicago Association of Law Libraries) and CLS (Chicago Library System). In addition, there will be time to discuss the types of programs that would be most valuable to this group. This will be a great opportunity for paraprofessionals working in a library setting to network with their peers.

Upcoming Special Event:

Illinois State Library, Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Secretary of State's Department of the Court of Claims, & CLS present a workshop, "Assistance for Victims of Violence." This two hour workshop is to establish commmunity and campus libraries as a central and safe environment to gather resources and referrals available to vitims of violence. Attendees will hear from the Secretary of State, Jesse White, as well as from Ellen Schanzle-Haskins, the Director of the Illinois Court of Claims, Illinois Secretary of Stet's office, among others.

Training includes information about the funds available for victims of violence (such as sexual assault, battery, domestic violence, reckless conduct, etc.) and what the eligibility requirements are for receiving such funds. Brochures, posters, and training materials will be provided.

The CLS CE Calendar and the Chicago Area Librarian's Calendar have been updated. Highlights of what this fall have to offer include Saul Amdursky speaking on how his library became the LJ Gale Library of the Year 2002, Patricia Wagner on "How to Stay Employed in the 21st Century," and Leo McLeod on "The Entreprenurial Library." This is on top of what looks like some great conferences that will be in the area: ILA, Virtual Reference Desk, ISLMA. (For non-Chicago librarians, you do not need to work at a CLS member library to attend CLS events. However, CLS members are given preference during the registration process.)

This is a problem being faced nationwide. The Chicago Public Library has made staffing adjustments recently in an attempt to deal with their budget shortfall. Some of the city's special libraries have also suffered from downsizing and restructuring.

As a result, CLS has partnered with local chapters of various library associations for career visioning workshops. The next career visioning workshop is scheduled for this fall. Check out CLS' CE calendar for more information.

Virtual Reference Desk Conference:

Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) Conference, "Charting the Course for Reference: Toward a Preferred Future" will be held in Chicago from Nov. 10-13. This year's theme focuses on planning and direction based on experience, research or trend analyses.

Last year several librarians from CLS member libraries attended the conference, whose theme was "Setting Standards and Making It Real," in Orlando, FL. They came back with really great ideas that enabled CLS to put together a more local follow-up in the spring (March 1, 2002), entitled "Electronic Reference Tools Symposium."
