"BASICS AND BEYOND" DIGITIZATION WORKSHOP

DES PLAINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY, TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2003

The Illinois Digitization Institute will be offering cultural heritage institutions a one-day workshop on digital imaging at the Des Plaines Historical Society on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. This workshop will introduce participants from museums and libraries to issues involved in planning digitization projects that will allow them to make informed decisions about starting such projects. The following topics will be addressed:

* Advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging

* How to plan successful andsustainable projects

* Equipment choices

* Digitization techniques

* Professional standards for digitalimages

* Making use of the Illinois Digital Archives (IDA)

In addition to presentations on these topics, plenty of time will be allowed for questions and general discussion. The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The registration fee is $45.00 per person and includes lunch.

This workshop is part of a series of workshops. Each one-day workshop will cover the same topics, but will be held at different locations around the state. Other workshops are scheduled for: Champaign Public Library, August 4, 2003; East Moline Public Library, August 19, 2003; Elgin Area Historical Society, Sept. 16; Chicago Historical Society, Oct. 6; and Southern Illinois University, Nov. 3.

Grant Writing for Preservation and Digitization Projects Workshop:

This workshop focuses on preparing for and writing grants for digitization and/or preservation projects, and places special emphasis grant requirements of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). Developing proposals for state, local and foundation funding sources will also be addressed. This workshop includes matching your institution's project with the appropriate funding agency and preparing to write a proposal. The majority of the day is spent covering the elements of a grant proposal and practicing writing those elements.

Outcomes: The ability to properly choose and prepare a grant proposal including evaluating appropriate funding sources, project preparation, hands-on practice in preparing a proposal.

CLS to offer Digital Project Management course:

Class Description:
This workshop is for decision makers and staff who are charged with considering a plunge into local digital conversion of collections. It will provide a basic overview of the complex, interconnected tasks and processes involved in creating digital resources -- from selection, funding, and staffing, through metadata creation, web site development, and archiving. Outsourcing versus in-house production will be compared. We'll survey features of the important building blocks for digital resources, including scanning techniques, ocr, and assets management, but we won't delve deeply into technical details or provide hands-on demonstrations. We will review current standards and best practices, and consider criteria for sustainable, usable digital resources. Experience with scanning equipment or digital cameras is helpful but not required.

CAMiLEON project

CAMiLEON project:

The CAMiLEON Project is developing and evaluating strategies for the preservation of digital materials, including emulation technologies. The joint project is being undertaken by the Universities of Michigan (USA) and Leeds (UK). It is funded by JISC and NSF.

"Microsoft plans online life archive. Microsoft researchers are working to create an electronic store for all your memories that could be as easy to search as Google. [BBC News | TECHNOLOGY]"

Libraries and archives may want to begin considering how they would store such life archives and how much access they will allow reseachers to these treasure troves of biographical information. These kinds of digital life archives may be in production soon especially as storage prices come down.

Illinois Periodicals Online:

The Illinois State Library has announced "the addition of Illinois Periodicals Online (IPO) to the Articles & Etc. service of Find-It! Illinois. IPO is a project of the Northern Illinois University Libraries, DeKalb, Illinois. IPO start-up funding was provided by the Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds awarded to them by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

To date, the IPO project has reached agreement with ten journals: Illinois Country Living, Illinois Heritage, Illinois History: A Magazine for Young People, Illinois History Teacher, Illinois Issues, Illinois Municipal Review, Illinois Parks & Recreation, Outdoor Illinois, Point of View, and Prairie Farmer. The digital imaging of these titles is an ongoing process. The goal is to scan a magazine's entire backrun up to the current time. The IPO Web page also has links to a number of related Illinois sites.
