Carl Silva, a faculty member at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, CA has an article, entitled “Creating a Better Learning Environment Through Communications,” in T.H.E. Journal. The article focuses on how Mitty High has used Docutek atSchool's course management and electronic reserves software to foster communication with parents, teachers, and students.

Problems with e-rate:
"E-Rate Fund Hit by Rampant Fraud. The $2.25 billion e-rate fund has helped connect thousands of U.S. schools and libraries to the Net. The fund is also subject to widespread fraud, abuse and 'honest' accounting mistakes. By Kendra Mayfield. [Wired News]"
This Wired article is of major interest in these dire financial times. It leads librarians to wonder "how can we save the e-rate?" and "is e-rate worth saving in its current form?"

No School Librarians in Springfield?
"Schools adjust to no librarians" [LISNews.com] has picked up an article from Springfield, IL on how the school district there cut school librarians as a way to deal with budget cuts. This is most definitley affecting their public library as well, since the schools now have a very limited library service.

A Look At Literacy in the US:

"Take Paul. (Students' names have been changed.) A few weeks into his first semester at Dixon High School in Dixon, California, everyone had him pegged as a dropout. "He was totally silent, wouldn't make eye contact," says his freshman English teacher, Lisa Krebs. "If I made a seating chart that put him in the middle, he moved himself to the back.
