GIS: Geographic Information Systems and Libraries

Date: November 20, 2002

Time: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon CT

Geographic Information Systems are more than just mapping software, they are database management tools which allow you to visually analyze data. GIS can be a valuable addition to any library -- GIS can be used to translate demographic relationships, patterns and trends from written or tabular form into meaningful visual representations.

Highlights of this fascinating program include:

-Report on a yearlong project to overlay 2000 U.S. Census data with both "normal" and unusual service boundaries. -Account of a special collaborative project to determine where a library building might best be placed in a community and which routes might work best for a delivery system. -Discussion of practical uses of GIS in all types of libraries.

Presenters include:

Nancy Davis-Southern Illinois University/Edwardsville

Alison Atkins Denton-Illinois Institute of Technology

Tina Hubert-Lewis and Clark Library System
