PPC asks for input from Illinois librarians:

The following news item was supplied by Kendi Kelly, ILA Public Policy Chair:

The recent Supreme Court Children’s Internet Protection Act decision and Illinois State budget cuts provided
the obvious topics for discussion when the Illinois Library Association (ILA) Public Policy Committee met July 1
at the Illinois State Library in Springfield.
Noting that CIPA clarifications will become available over the next few weeks, Public Policy Committee Chairperson
Kendi Kelley encouraged librarians to take time to study the issue and decide whether they will be required to filter.
"There is no need to rush out and buy the first filter you find," said Kelley, Administrative Librarian for C.E. Brehm
Memorial Public Library District in Mt. Vernon.
In order for the Public Policy Committee to gauge the impact of the ruling, she is encouraging all public library staff to email
her at kendik@shawls.lib.il.us and answer the following two questions: 1) Does your library currently use a filtering product,
and if so to what extent? 2) Do you believe the ruling will require you to filter in the future?
The committee also discussed strategies to deal with the Illinois State Budget cuts as they impact Illinois library users. The ILA
Public Policy Principles were reviewed as preparation for developing the 2004 Legislative Program. Individuals are encouraged
to submit suggested initiatives to ILA President Nancy Gillfillan at ngillfil@starband.net.
The next PPC meeting will be held August 5 via VTEL from the Illinois State Library, DuPage Library System and
Shawnee Library System.

IL State Historical Library Resumes ILL and Mail Reference:

The IL State Historical Library has announced that it will resume its interlibrary loan services and its mail research and reference services effective July 7, 2003. They also announced that "the ISHL CONTINUES to be open to the public for onsite reference and research services Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm underneath the Old State Capitol in downtown Springfield. The ISHL has NOT moved into its new facility at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential and NO date for that move has been set." --per Kathryn M. Harris, Director, IL State Historical Library

Frankenstein exhibit comes to Illinois:

"Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature," a national traveling exhibit developed by the National Library of Medicine in collaboration with the American Library Association, will be in Illinois libraries from April 2003 through November 2005. Participating libraries include MacMurray College, Rockford Public Library, Chicago Public Library, Moraine Valley Community College, Ela Area Public Library District, and Eastern Illinois University.

AALL Announces VERONICA MACLAY STUDENT GRANT:

The Government Documents Special Interest Section of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL GD-SIS) announced that it will grant $400 to a student currently enrolled in an ALA accredited library and information studies master's program so that the student may attend the AALL Annual Meeting & Conference held July 12-16, 2003 in Seattle, Washington. The deadline for APPLICATIONS is APRIL 30, 2003.

The first U.S. national Profile for Z39.50:

"The first U.S. national Profile for Z39.50 is out for review and ballot from February 3-March 14. Z39.50 is the international standard that helps you retrieve information across lots of databases; this Profile will simplify and improve its implementation among all its U.S. users. Comments are invited. [Catalogablog]"

This is great news for Illinois libraries, many of whom are currently using the Bath (International) profile for the Z39.50 standard. If your library hasn't adopted its use, please consider it. Some of the initatives (like VIC) being worked on by the Illinois State Library and the regional library systems require everyone to adopt the same profile for Z39.50.

No School Librarians in Springfield?

"Schools adjust to no librarians" [LISNews.com] has picked up an article from Springfield, IL on how the school district there cut school librarians as a way to deal with budget cuts. This is most definitley affecting their public library as well, since the schools now have a very limited library service.
