A Look At Literacy in the US:

They don't have their books. They didn't read the assignment: They forgot; they had to work; it was just too boring."

"Take Paul. (Students' names have been changed.) A few weeks into his first semester at Dixon High School in Dixon, California, everyone had him pegged as a dropout. "He was totally silent, wouldn't make eye contact," says his freshman English teacher, Lisa Krebs. "If I made a seating chart that put him in the middle, he moved himself to the back.
