Front and Center with: John Callaway

Patriot Act: Security or Suppression. Join host John Callaway as he and his guests examine the impact of the Patriot Act on American security and liberty. Monday, May, 24, 2004. 5:00 p.m. Reception - 6:00 p.m. Program. Pritzker Military Library, 610 N. Fairbanks Court, Chicago, IL. Ever since President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act into law in October of 2001 in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, a national debate has raged on whether the act provides necessary tools to fight terrorism or deprives Americans of basic civil rights. May 24th Callaway and his guests will explore the Patriot Act and its impact on American security and liberty.

The Pritzker Military Library welcomes the public at its live web casts. Although there is no admission charge, reservations are suggested as space is limited. The specific items available from the former library of the New Standard Encyclopedia are listed at the end. They are available for pick up.

Interested institutions should respond to me at either ch2442@aol.com or 708-386-0456. The deadline for requesting any of the materials is Monday, 5/3/04.
The requesting library will have to make arrangements to pick up the items in downtown Chicago (Jackson & Wells). Depending on how much, or if it is the shelving, weekends would be best--either the last weekend of April or the weekend of 5/8/04.

CALL for NOMINATIONS - The Presidents of the SLS and CMLS Boards have appointed a Nominating Committee to select and confirm candidates for election to the new System Board. Members of the Nominating Committee include: Mary Sue Brown, Woodridge PL; Jim Wall, Elmhurst PL; Sylvia Jenkins, Moraine Valley Community College; Pat Pinkowski, Alzheimer's Institute and Nancy John, University of Illinois at Chicago. You are invited to submit your name, interest and qualifications to the Nominating Committee by Monday, April 19, 2004. The Committee will meet shortly thereafter to establish a slate of candidates.

The Procedure for the Nomination Process as well as the Board Responsibilities and the official Application are attached here in PDF format.

Of the 15 member board, 10 seats are currently available. Remember, this year, for the first time, you will be electing a public library administrator as well as public library trustees, school and special library representatives.

IT'S OFFICIAL

Following a “Building the Future” day on March 22, 2004, with the members, boards, and staffs of CMLS and SLS, both boards met separately to vote on whether or not the merger should take place. Both boards voted unanimously that, on July 1, 2004, CMLS and SLS will become one system.

The transition board then met to approve the combined System Area and Per-capita grant application, during which time they discussed and approved the name for the new system. On July 1, 2004, we will become METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM.

A special thanks to the membership, board and staff of both systems who worked so hard to make this happen.

Mark your calendars and join us in Springfield for Illinois Library Advocacy Day 2004 on April 21, 2004.

Sponsored by the Illinois Library Association, Illinois Library System Directors Organization, and the Illinois School Library Media Association. Hosted by the Illinois State Library.

Want to ride the bus from Chicago to Springfield the day of the event?

We're leaving at 5:45 AM SHARP (yikes that's early!) from the intersection of Wabash and Jackson (we'll be parked right in front of Starbucks--which thankfully will be open). We have to stop and pick library folks up in the Suburban Library System (SLS) in Burr Ridge and possibly the Heritage Trail Libraries System (HTLS) in Shorewood as well.

We'll leave Springfield for Chicagoland at (or near) 2:30pm with those same stops at SLS and again possibly HTLS on the way back to Chicago.
