And we thought Adabrock had it tough
Unwiring Everest is HARD. It turns out that setting up WiFi access on the climbing-approaches to Mt. Everest is really hard:
But in contrast to many climber services, this one does not stand to benefit foreign-run outfitters primarily. Although it is an obvious perk for the climbers, the residents of a nearby town may get Internet access because of it, and the mountain may get a bit cleaner.
The technical challenge is significant. Wireless radios will be positioned on moving glaciers, and gear must be insulated against temperatures far colder than they were designed to withstand. And at the helm of the project is Mr. Gyaltsen, who is not wealthy and has no formal technical training. Link Discuss (via WiFi News) [Boing Boing Blog]

Fourier Transforms and Heart Rate Signals
I've been thinking about heartbeats and Fourier Transforms. FFTs are things I used to carry out routinely for analyzing the spectral content of periodic and chaotic time series. You sure as hell don't see them much around small hospitals. But here's a rather fascinating paper on the subject:

In particular, look at the wonderful Fig 3.

From Jeroen:
MS buys PlaceWare.
ZDNet : Microsoft buys Net Collaboration firm PlaceWare
Gupta downplayed the impact on Groove. "The deal is complementary to what we're doing with Groove Networks," he said. "One of the key areas we are partnering with Groove is around the SharePoint Team Services initiative." [Jeroen Bekkers' Groove Weblog]
and more on that story:
In conjunction with the announcement, Microsoft also created a new business unit, Real Time Collaboration, as part of the Information Worker division. Anoop Gupta will head the new division and report to Jeff Raikes, Microsoft's group vice president of productivity and business services.
Gupta worked in Microsoft Research for five years and more recently served as a technical adviser to company Chairman Bill Gates.
