Freedom! Say what?
The Commentary by Lauren Weinstein in the Wired Magazine (http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,56954,00.html) is a must read for anyone interested in the sanctity of personal freedom, privacy, and enjoying the rights granted under the United States Constitution. Since September 11, the government has steadily stripped us off of our rights, dignity, and freedom. If you dissent you are an enemy combatant. You disappear! Thats what happened in other countires with dictators, communist regimes, etc. Those of us who came to this country believing in the constitutional guarantee of freedom and civil rights are left with the feeling of betrayal. People born in this country continue, on the other hand, with passive indifference. Like the saying, only when they come to take me away did I realize what I have not done to prevent this from happening!
George Santayana said, "those who forget history are condemned to repeat it."
A student of history can see that, from the oldest to the newest, empires had fewer years of glory. The most recent empire to loose its glory was the British, lasting 350 years or so. The decline came in the last 50 years. US is building its empire, peaking after the collapse of the Soviet and communist regimes. Empires have lost their glory as they reached their pinnacles and became arrogant. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, said Disraely. If it is respect we desire then we must learn to be gentle and caring with the power we have!
