I believe the 'killer app' for telemedicine will be home health. I think the telemedicine industry has focused way too long on a hospital-centric or clinic-centric approach. Right now what I see is a continued effort to get remote sites up and running so they can start referring to specialty docs. Dermatology, ENT, and others are classic examples of telemed enabled referrals.
What if you switched to a patient centric architecture? What are the implications of this? Things that make you go "hmmmm". I think thoughts along this line deserve more attention, and I plan on looking at our budding procedures to do just that. Discounting VTC quality real-time video many of our patients already have the resources to be a part of a telemed system. Empowering the edge/fringe. Bears more looking into.
