and, before I put my beautiful Lucy to bed...

Ask any Oregonian whether s/he thinks that the percentage of hisser income  that goes to state and local taxes has increased, since 1980,  by

          A) 5%

          B) 10%, or

          C) 15%

Most people I have talked to will select (C).

The truth is that the proportion of  personal income that Oregonians pay in state and local taxes since 1980 is

DOWN  by 2%.

It's such a bummer when the truth gets in the way of good ideology...

Are you tired of paying taxes to educate other people's children?

You aren't.

You are paying paying taxes to live in an educated society.

Despite what you have been told for years and years, and what you "know" as a result of the drumbeat of propaganda,  the United States has never been as literate and well educated as it is today.

Your tax dollars go TO educate the doctor who treats you, the lawyer who handles your estate (or your divorce) and the guy who fixes your car.  They can read and write and do the math they need to do to serve you, as well as  perform the advanced skills you need because of the taxes you pay for education.  (most college graduates have a degree from a publically funded institution).  Despite what you have heard from the same people who convinced you that public education doesn't work, there is no free lunch.

public education.  you need it.  you have to pay for it.

you don't need to like it--you just need to know that it is true.
