Opponents on the Issues (Part I) "I feel that our top issues are the economy, controlled growth, public safety and protecting our environment, as well as education." ---- Mike Winstead Trying to determine here the best tack to take in challenging my opponents on the issues. Little of any substance for me to go on from Mr. Winstead's website. The major use of pixels is dedicated to photo ops with fellow GOPers -- Important I suppose for winning the vote of hard core registered Republicans in District 7 who look no further than party affiliation on making their choice as to who will represent them on the County Commission. I note from Mr. Winstead's second full page color ad in this week's Rhino (cost per ad about $2000) that if elected he offers to donate each year his entire county commissioner's salary (about $14,000 before taxes) to a children's charity. Having spent in the neighborhood of $45,000 to win his primary, Mr. Winstead's (and his supporter's) investment towards winning a seat on the Guildford County board of commissioners is likely to be in the $100,000 neighborhood. While I admit there could be others, I see three possible motives for Mr. Winstead seeking this seat on the commission: 1) A generous man, He wants to give back to his community over $100,000 for the honor of providing his insight to the operation of our county. 2) Money is not as important as the opportunity to enjoy public life on the county commission. 3) He and his supporters are not spending $100,000, they are investing it with the expectation of even greater returns. 9:26:56 PM |
