Defense of Freedom
(passed on February 5th by unanimous vote)
A Resolution From The Greensboro Human Relations Commission recommending that the Greensboro City Council pass a resolution opposing parts of the USA Patriot Act and some Executive Orders that remove protections of civil rights and liberties from the people of Greensboro.
WHEREAS, The City of Greensboro has a diverse population that is vital to our community's character, and that we have a long tradition of protecting human rights and civil liberties thatprotect all of our residents, including non-citizens and therecently-immigrated; and
WHEREAS, Many of the citizens of Greensboro are concerned that certain provisions of the USA Patriot Act and several Executive Orders now threaten our civil rights and liberties guaranteed under the United States Constitution; and
WHEREAS, In a time of concern over terrorism, our country must find a balance between the need for national security and the need for protection of our basic civil rights and liberties, and
WHEREAS, Over 30 cities and towns across America have passed resolutions to affirm the civil rights and liberties of theirpeople, and
WHEREAS, The Greensboro Bill of Rights Defense Committee has researched and made available information and available resources pertaining to these threats to our civil rights and liberties, and
WHEREAS, The City of Greensboro Human Relations Commission believes that some aspects of the USA Patriot Act and some Executive Orders are an unnecessary threat to the civil rights and liberties of the people of Greensboro; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the City of Greensboro join communities across the nation in expressing concern that some aspects of the USA Patriot Act threatens civil rights and liberties guaranteed under the United States Constitution; and
RESOLVED, That the City of Greensboro affirms its strong opposition to terrorism, and also affirms its strong belief that there not be unnecessary sacrifices of civil rights and liberties in the fight against terrorism; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the City of Greensboro pass a resolution opposing parts of the USA Patriot Act and some Executive Orders that unnecessarily remove protections of civil rights and liberties for the people of Greensboro; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the City of Greensboro send copies of the resolution to the U.S. Congressmen and U.S. Senators who represent the people of Greensboro.
