A picture named 7202053-main.jpgEye Candy [2]. Oh, and it gets even better: MOTCO is an online picture library about the history of Great Britain. Fab.

"This website contains a reference database of topographical prints, maps, prospects and panoramas of London, the Thames and the UK. It also provides the opportunity to purchase high quality reproductions which make excellent gifts."
6:07:44 PM     |

A picture named 806947W.jpgEye Candy. Now this is amazing. The New York Public Library Picture Collection must be one of the best free picture libraries online. There are thousands of images depicting American history.

"The Picture Collection Online is an image resource site for those who seek knowledge and inspiration from visual materials. It is a collection of 30,000 digitized images from books, magazines and newspapers as well as original photographs, prints and postcards, mostly created before 1923."

A picture named boat.jpgAnd that. Meaning, U-Boats and that WAR in particular. I'm getting fed up with all of this shit. Here you go:

A picture named gay.jpgGay Bar. Oh, this is so brilliant. A music-videoclip featuring George and Tony. "YOU - I wanna take you to a GAY BAR!! Let's start a nuclear war - at a GAY BAR!!!" I haven't seen anything better for ages. Watch it, please do. It's hilarious. Available in Flash6 or Quicktime.

"I've got something to put in you..."

Thanks Michael, via Email.

A picture named old.gifA repeat. This is an old entry from November, 11. And I still like it. Worth repeating. Guess what: All the links still work!

Slot Car Racing! When I was about 4 - 5 years old, my father once brought home a Scalextric Racing track. It came with two Lotus Formula 1 cars (or was it Vanwall?), and the little plastic drivers inside the cars actually leaned into the bends. That was great fun.

Later on, when I was 14, I got a german Carrera 1:24 track, 4 lanes and you could tune the cars with softer wheels or high-tuned 'engines'.

Back to Scalextric, because Carrera isn't much available here in England. At The Slotcar Race Place at Anders Lattermann you can find a lot of Scalextric track layouts as PDF files. This site is definitely worth a visit. And this Slot Cars Site is another site about slot cars.

If you want to tune the cars, have a look at Slotcarracing - Your favourite slot car.

Good grief...this is really nerd stuff. But very enjoyable. Definitely more fun than Playstation.

A picture named pen.gifInk. Just found on Hans Presto's fabulous BLAM! Design website a link to Illustrator Draftsman 3 & 2, which is basically a complete drawing course as a PDF document. Fantastic.

"This is one of four in the US Navy Draftsman (DM) training series . Volume 1 is an overview of general shop administration, available equipment, required operator adjustments, and equipment maintenance. Knowing the capabilities and limitations of the equipment before creating artwork is essential."

So in case Quark Xpress crashes again and renders your computer useless, you know what to do: get out the old drawing board, together with pen and ink.

A picture named caligari.jpg1919 Expressionism. Robert Wiene's movie, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is the classic example of Expressionism in early German cinema. Dark and broody, and the sets are just marvellous. Have a look at the (screenshot) storyboards.

A picture named gold.jpgThe Art of James Bond. This is the title of a fascinating website dedicated to Ian Fleming's James Bond and all the artists behind his work. All the covers of the rare first editions are there, all the poster artwork, the main title designs and lots more. One can spend hours over there.

"Welcome to The Art of James Bond - a look at the world of 007 via the artwork that has promoted the character across all media from the early 1950's to the present day.

The literary world of James Bond is represented via the artwork of the first editions and paperback covers through to the often overlooked 007 comic strip and Playboy serialisations.

The art of James Bond in the cinema is examined in-depth with features on poster artwork from around the world and a look at the work of key production designers and the creators of the influential Main Title sequences."

A picture named schrat.gifSounds good. London Review of Books opens shop. Books: New venture by a literary magazine eschews the pile-'em-high philosophy of the giants of the bookselling world. [Guardian Unlimited].

"Hard by the British Museum, in a building recently vacated by a spa that offered solace to the dying, a new old-fashioned bookshop opened on Monday.

It does not sell How to Succeed manuals, has no truck with discounting, and refuses to dally with two-for-the-price-of-one offers. There are no feng shui books either.

Instead its shelves are packed with one copy - in some cases two - of some of the finest titles in print, selected by a formidable team of critics."

A picture named qr361.jpgLondon History, Part #1. Today: Fleet Street. I'm only mentioning this because I had a couple of pints tonight in a few pubs around the area. Have fun. Here's more. Next history lesson is either Chelsea or St Pauls. Depends on where I'm having the next beers.

A picture named l4a.jpgAbsolutely tasteless. The German website accordingly named Hossaschlager presents lyrics of German hits of the 60s and 70s, old German postcards and covers of German pulp publications. This is unbelievable; I'm lost for words.

A picture named radioretroanimwhite.gifFinally, the missing manual? New Radio UserLand book from Rogers Cadenhead. Rogers just announced that his new book on Radio UserLand will be published this summer by Sams Publishing: "There's an amazing amount of stuff you can do with the software -- I can't think of another $40 program that supports Internet content management and publishing, information aggregation, programming, object-oriented database storage, and a long list of buzzworthy acronyms: HTTP, HTML, XML, FTP, XML-RPC, SOAP, and RSS." A picture named xtrue4.jpgThe Jurassic Web. This made my day. Old dinosaur books with fantastic illustrations. Plain brilliant. Thanks a lot for the link, Anneke!

"I know it doesn't seem to bear the slightest relationship to the rest of this page . But I love old dinosaur books. It's just a hobby of mine. Whenever I see any old, scientifically out of date books about dinosaurs, I grab 'em. The more inaccurate the better! I know dinosaurs were actually real animals but I love it when dinosaurs are depicted as outlandish, horrible monsters. I've developed quite a little collection. Since there is absolutely nothing on the web as far as I've been able to see about this, it is my duty to supply it!"

A picture named group.jpgThat's. Wire. Tabs and lyrics to 12XU? Or Pink Flag? Reuters? Here they are:

[tabulated by andersom[at]spot.colorado.edu]

[E5 B5 F#5]

e|-----------------|
B|-----------------|
D|-----------------|
D|-----------------|
A|-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-|
E|-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|

[P. M., alternating up- and down-strokes]

Saw you in a mag (smoking a fag),
kissing a man

[C#5]

I got you in a corner (cottage),
got you in a corner

[E5 B5]

12XU

All their songs are not more than 3 or 4 chords. Usually just one chord, with a bit of tabbing on guitar or bass. That's what makes them great. Easy. But play it LOUD.

A picture named schrat.gifAnd just to let you know... ...or else. ALL of those black and white cartoons on the left hand side of my entries have indeed been drawn by nobody else but me. Except there's a drawing, painting or photograph that directly refers to especially that website. Then it belongs to that site, and nobody else. Or to the Copyright holder.

All the other stuff is by yours truly, The Cartoonist. Which means, if you want to use any of my cartoons for your homepage or God knows what, please ask me. Just ask. Do not download and then upload any of my pictures (from The Cartoonist, my 3D-Illustrations or ESPECIALLY my Raumpatrouille gallery) to your website without mentioning where you got it from.

I'm only writing this because I'm now involved in a legal battle with Bavaria Film AG and/or Schwanstein TV, who both reside in dreadful Southern Germany (Bayern! Bavaria!). Documents are here, here and here.

This, of course, doesn't count for fellow bloggers who refer to my entries anyway. Just carry on.

Anybody else: Please just ASK! Again: Just ask. I've got 3 email addresses, so it can't be that complicated really.

That's the title of an article (in German, I'm afraid) about the horrible seventies: Bonanza bikes, Kreuzer Füller, Bazooka Joe chewing gum, Chreme 21 - they're all being mentioned, together with pics. And of course the dreadful 'Apple Shampoo'. Alright then - where's 'The Sweet' homepage? Ballroom Blitz.

A picture named butt_bridge.jpg... from swerve of shore to bend of bay. Big website about architectural Dublin; development, history, houses, streets - one can spend hours there.

"Dublin Bay, with its great sweep of coast from the rocky brow of Howth in the north to the headland of Dalkey in the south, is a fitting introduction to one of Europe's finest capitals. The city is spread over the broad valley of the River Liffey, with the Wicklow Hills sheltering it on the south. In addition to its splendid public buildings, Dublin is particularly rich in domestic architecture of the 18th century. Fine Georgian mansions, many of them with historical association, lends elegance to the city's wide streets and spacious squares."

A picture named crazy.gifTime for Poetry. I'm still in a Wire mood. Their song Reuters sums up all the madness of the Bush admin:

Our own correspondent is sorry to tell
Of an uneasy time that all is not well

On the borders there's movement
In the hills there is trouble
Food is short, crime is double

Prices have risen since the government fell
Casualties increase as the enemy shell
The climate's unhealthy, flies and rats thrive
And sooner or later the end will arrive

This is your correspondent, running out of tape
Gunfire's increasing, looting, burning, rape

And remember: this song is from about 1977.

A picture named thomas.jpgJazz goes to the movies. The German film composer Peter Thomas of Raumpatrouille and Edgar Wallace fame gives one of his rare live performances, together with a screening of one episode of Raumpatrouille, on the 9th of May in Wiesbaden. More infos (in German) are here and here.

A picture named WavyFlag3.gifRaw Power. My ears are still ringing. Amazing, how much noise only 4 people are able to generate.

I just got back from the Wire concert at the Barbican. They were absolutely fantastic. Pure Punk.

"Another day. Another cigarette. From A to B. Again avoiding C, D and E."

They played the complete Pink Flag album, the highlight being '1-2-XU' of course, the best Punk Hymn ever pressed onto vinyl. And they played it at least twice as fast as on the album.

"Our own correspondent is sorry to tell of an uneasy time that all is not well. On the borders there's movement. In the hills there is trouble. Food is short, crime is double."

There were Aerobic videos playing on a big screen in the background. Then a 45 minute break to rearrange the stage, and they played send. Noise, noise, noise. And the band was boxed in, with videos playing on top of them; and their new stuff actually better than the old Pink Flag. After 13 years they just crop up again and produce better music than in the 70s.

"Trust me. Believe me. It's all in the art of stopping."

I've set up a gallery of pictures here (Hey, they call me Mr Focal Length!). Wow. The Velvet Underground Reunion was fab; Devo were great; the Ramones were noisy - but Wire beats them all. Except the Damned perhaps, back in 1977.

Now go to Wire.

"The smell of you
That's the lowdown.
"
