The end of this blog

Been too long since I last posted ... why?

I started a mobile fotolog (mofolog?) and I am addicted to it. I find that I enjoy visual expression better than verbal ... always have. I am a visual person, always have been.

I struggle to find the time and the subject matter to write about. I have a lot to say but not really convinced anyone needs to hear it. Plus less chance of getting myself in to trouble.

So ... sorry blog ... you are on permahold until another day.

My new daily journal ...

http://www.fotolog.net/lennp

til then

Off to Greece

Never been there before, but should be a pretty cool trip for a business trip. Running into a good friend from Munich and spending a day on the Island of Hydra with him as well. Should be a learning experience. I love travel, and I will post my experiences and photos during the week as bandwidth permits. See you from the other side of the world.

I jinxed it ...

I had to go tempt the techno gods and brag about just how great my Nokia 3650 phone is and how much I was enjoying it. I have done countless demos for people all over the place. Well since I bragged about what a wonderful job Nokia/Symbian did on the system and how rock solid it is ... I got slapped back down to earth today.

I was just about to enter a reg code for an application that I bought when the phone froze up. I decided to just pull a hard reboot and restart the thing expecting it to recover its self and return to state. WRONG! I restarted it and it hung. I tried multiple restarts and still got the Nokia logo of death, no OS. Being a software professional I knew that if reboots don't work ... start changing things. I took out the battery, the SIM, the MMC card in various orders and finally found that if I took out the MMC card it would boot again. 2 hours of research and fancy trickery trying to keep the battery power on while sliding the MMC card back into the slot under the battery I finally was able to reformat the card using a system utility. Thankfully I had just done a full back up the night before in prep for my travels next week.

None of us are perfect in software, but we all have a very long way to go. Atleast I got my phone back up and running.

Woo Hoo ... I am back

Finally, I managed to get a few minutes to register FM Radio Station so I could get back to blogging. Thanks for the help Stephen! The past few weeks have been hell, too much to do, not enough sleep, way too much pressure. I am getting ready to head out to Athens, Greece on Saturday which makes it even more challenging to get a few minutes to blog ... but I have plenty to say. Sounds like an opportunity to catch up on my thoughts on the 10 hour British Airways flight I have to endure just to get to London.

I Love My New Nokia 3650

Call me a traitor, tar and feather me. I worked on the Microsoft mobility business for a year and a half and loved every minute of it ... but I went out and bought the new Nokia 3650 smart phone. I bought it with my own cash, it looks and works great, it plucked my heart strings, it inspired me. Most of all it executes on scenarios not technology. Like my iMac it makes the technology less obvious makes scenarios more apparent. That is why people buy technology products ... to do things (yes I know that is debately in many cases).

Today I took 4 photographs that I never would have taken and shared them with people while away from my PC. I took a short video as well and saved it on my PC. I checked my personal email account, I looked at when my next meeting was, and I talked to my mom on speaker phone on the way home in the car. How cool is that ... I did all of this with MY PHONE ... and it works pretty much anywhere in the civilized world thanks to GSM.

Next month I have to go to Athens, Greece on a business trip. Never been there before, neither has my wife. This time she will be practically visiting it in real-time instead of getting a call telling her how cool, interesting, or beautiful something I saw was. It will be a new way to experience travel, I am looking forward to it.

Check it out ...

Ray Dropping Science

Ray Ozzie kicks us all some knowledge in his latest interview. This man gets it. Whether it can be monetized or not is a different question.

“Rebuilding the Internet up one level will require bringing new standard elements into the Internet stack. Ozzie gave examples of what could be part of a rebuilding effort, including XML packets replacing IP packets, encrypted V-cards instead of the usual DNS, a message-switching layer more like the open source Jabber than SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), or a dynamic DNS that works more like instant messaging for finding people. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It's far more likely that these kinds of improvements will take root at a middleware rather than operating system level. It takes years for operating systems to design, test and implement new features. In addition, the middleware approach, like Web services, allows components to operate on disparate hardware and software platforms, independent from the infrastructure. “

Been traveling for the past two weeks and hence the Radio silence (pun intended)

This trip reminded me of just how far we have to go to get broadband and wireless connectivity readily available across the world. It is amazing how many top name hotels don't have broadband. Starbucks is our friend ... but I shouldn't have to walk 1/2 mile from my hotel to get network access. This has limited my blogging capabilities combined with problems I had with getting FM Radio to work offline. Glad to be back.

Big day for Apple ... big day for the industry

Today is the big music launch from Apple. Speculation is that they will unveil a new pay music service that tops anything out there so far, plus a line of new iPods. If they deliver, it will send shockwaves through the industry. Especially if they were able to get multiple big labels to agree on a common way of doing things. Guess we shall see what lies ahead later today.
