Evil!

It's amazing to see the influence of my daughter's friends, society, and myself upon her. She has some pretty religious friends apparently.

Anything bad must come from the devil she says. I respectfully disagree, as I do not believe in any mythical creature called "the devil". But I let her think what she wants to. We have been reading her children's bible with her for her daily school reading assignment. I don't want her to be ignorant of other religions just because I'm not religious. I consider myself more spiritual than anything.

Deaf is a bad word said one of her friends. Huh? Is this some politically correct babble? Not sure.

My daughter looked at the photo of Britney and Madonna (I love Madonna!) kissing and decided she didn't like Britney Spears anymore (yea!). But in all honesty I have no problem with it even if it was more than a publicity stunt which it wasn't.

By the way, Madonna links to a spirituality for kids page that looks interesting. ~Jennifer

Lost, Found, and Renewable

Well I lost the Sunless.com sunless tanning contest. That is ok, it was fun, plus I won in 2000 already.

Finally back after a week without internet service at home. A storm apparently had knocked the cable out.

A band member of the French industrial band JenX sent me their link after finding my contact info. in a music forum I had signed as JenX. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me.

Etheric will be performing at the End of Summer Weenie Roast this year with many famous headliners. Pretty cool!!!!

You've gotta read this article about Libertarian Dave Goree's plan to bring jobs to Asheville, NC. He told us a little about it at the state LP Executive Committee meeting today. Renewable energy for Asheville. The Sierra Club just loves it. ~Jen

Concentrate

To be honest, I don't believe that anyone anywhere has all of the answers to solve our country's problems. Political philosophies and parties are like religions, in that they are all right and all wrong at the same time. Plus, there are many misconceptions about people and groups of people in general. We are all individuals, and we are all different shades, just like there are different shades of grey in every issue. We are all an interdependent web. I take issue with what Todd posted at the Monkey Media Report today, because I do have a problem with centralized corporate power. Any concentration of power is not good. Todd seems to think libertarians are anti-union. That is absolutely FALSE.

Smoke-In last week's Charlotte Rhino Times, a non-smoker called The Beep twice, lamenting that there were no smokelesss places outside in Uptown Charlotte to eat. My reply was printed this week and should be available on The Rhino web site tomorrow. I didn't realize I had such a pun at the end of my call until I read it in The Rhino last Friday. LOL.

Spam-Last week I actually caught Neal Boortz's broadcast on WBT just before going to bed. Boortz was talking about e-mail "spam". He thinks the solution to cut down on spam would be for the Internet Service companies to charge everyone a few cents each time they send an e-mail. E-mail charges would just be credited to our IP account (or whoever provides us with e-mail, a domain, etc) every month. I am not sure if he thought that spammers should be treated differently or what. He did not go into that much detail.

I think any charges for an advertisement that is e-mailed should not be credited back, however this would require a lot of expense for the Internet Providers and may not be feasible unless the IPs target known spammers and do not allow them a credit (But then we don't want a situation where IPs actually profit from spam sent, do we? Then again, since Yahoo! and MSN keep changing their marketing and privacy terms I am not so sure they aren't profiting right now).

This might work, but remember, advertisers still send loads of junk mail even though they are charged. However, this idea would indeed cut down on the profitability of spam. I just deleted a bunch of spam today from my inbox (darn Yahoo! won't give me a filter even though I pay them for my domain and web hosting for my art site) and boy was it annoying. Lots of spam with files. Delete, delete, delete.

Perhaps they should charge spammers one cent every time they use the letter S. But alas, there is always a solution around laws and rules that some people eventually get around. My apologies to the Hormel Corporation for the abuse of the word spam. Well no, I take that back. Actually I hate both! ~Jennifer

Harry Potter: The New Atlas Shrugged?

I'd have to agree with Boston, this book does address the issue of government corruption quite a bit. Not having read Atlas Shrugged I couldn't compare it to Harry Potter, but I did enjoy this book a lot even though it is sort of predictable and doesn't have the depth of some books. J.K. Rowling is amazing, I really long to be a writer when I read good fiction.

I recently wrote a letter to the editor of the Charlotte Observer, and even though they haven't called me about printing it, I did get joy just from writing it.

Boston has some excellent points about The Order of the Phoenix, how it has a libertarian slant. But that does not mean that Rowling purposely intended it to be connected with libertarianism.

CEFG

I'm going to be creating the web site for the Charlotte-based Citizens for Effective Government. Lewis Guignard, a Libertarian, is president of CEFG. Much of what they do is reasearch local issues and come up with suggestions so that local government can save money. Giving solutions instead of just criticism. Much of the organization consists of older white men, many Republicans. We're going to diversify!

Acting and Politics

Friday night my husband and I went to see Tomb Raider. It was okay. Angelina Jolie is one of my favorite stars to look at though, next to Johnny Depp who did a superb job in Pirates.

I hear that Carlton Harvey, Libertarian candidate for (Charlotte) mayor did a great job stirring up the crowd at the recent NAACP Black Caucus candidates' fourum. I wish it had been open to the public, I would have liked to see it. I am sure I will get a chance to see him in action later on.

The most important thing for me when I vote is the individual candidate. What they think, how they act, what their motivations are. This is more important than political party affiliation, because there are always going to be bad apples in every bunch. Although I think there are way too many bad apples in office out there, and not enough individuals who are really in it for the right reasons.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Republican? Could have fooled me. I would have mistaken him for a Democrat since he has no problem with more spending. But oh wait. Republicans spend just as much or more when it suits them. All the partisan bickering about spending is really pointless, the goal is always over how much to spend in the majority of cases. Unless you're talking about Congressman Ron Paul, who truly wants to shrink government.
