Recently my favorite online game recently has been Star Wars Galaxies. It is loosely based on the Star Wars movies. You create and control a character (one of several of the movie's humanoid type races) in a world with several planets and moons in the Corellian Sector. My character is a Rodian, somekind of fanciful spaceman with a snorkely snout and greenish skin. Here is what he looks like, decked out in his guild uniform and carrying his trusty carbine. As in many multi-player online role playing games there is an element of adventure and questing. You run around tracking down Imperial operatives or monsters and blasting them. Running is done on a Swoop Speederbike or you can do it mounted on one of the fanciful animals from Star Wars fame. You can do quests and tasks for the likes of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia or the Jabba the Hutt. There is quite a bit of interaction with other player characters, but one nice thing about this game (SWG) a lot can be done solo.
There is quite a player based economy. Almost all of the items available to player characters are made by player characters. My character, Gelati, is a Tailor and Merchant. He maintains a Tailor shop and Merchant tent and sells resources and clothing and spices. A source of great fun is his guild the Eagles of Freedom. This way you get to know a small group of people online and you mutually help each other in your online quests.
