Through the Trees

Geo found himself walking along a narrow path in a forested area.  The smell of rich earth and evergreen leaves was delightful to his senses.  He could hear a rushing river on his left.  After a few minutes he wondered to himself why am I staying on this path?  It’s not as if I know where I should be going…  But then he looked ahead and saw that the path led down to a large, wood-hewn lodge.  This lodge gave him a sense of Déjà vu … he was at once charmed and mystified by it.  It was set back from the river, and half of the house was on stilts.  There were large decks that overlooked the river.  The wood work was beautiful.  There was cord wood stacked on the front porch, and a paper bag atop this.  Geo opened the bag.  There were vegetables inside, along with a note:

Geo,

As you don’t yet have a garden of your own, please accept these vegetables and the food in your refrigerator as a token of our welcome. We own the store and shop right down at the corner.  If there is anything you need, let us know.

Sincerely.

Gordon and Ruby Yee

“Hey guys!” yelled Geo, “Looks like we have some new friends already” ---But he looked all around him, and found that he was alone. He felt a chill run through his body, the hairs standing up on his neck. Geo knew a bit about doors to and from other worlds.  He sensed that Pigmet and Shiara just were not here.

He sighed, sad to be separated from his friends again.  He picked up the bag of vegetables, and opened the door to the house.  Dust flew up from various places.  “It looks like dinner for one tonight,” he said, and then he sneezed.
