We have an amendment on our Colorado ballot this year to make all elections mail in elections (no more standing in line to vote). I will be voting against that amendment. Why, you may ask, do I want to maintain the voting line? Because I LOVE standing in that line, visiting with my fellow citizens, visiting with the poll volunteers, making a public profession of my affiliation and affection for the Democratic party, and participating in a ritual that binds me to all the other citizens that have voted in this way in the history of the USA. I LOVE putting that "I have voted" sticker on my shirt. I LOVE that it takes a wee bit of effort on the part of each citizen to vote. But most of all, I LOVE that there is a line, a sign that these folks care enough to be out in what is usually a cold and dark moment with kids in hand practicing what it means to be a citizen.
I don't think putting my ballot in the mailbox would touch my soul in the same way.
