I've Had My Say

I've Had My Say

Have you had yours?

I'm going to pour myself a glass of wine and sit back to watch history unfold. This is probably the most important election I've ever voted in. I don't know how close it's going to be, but I think we're in for a long night before the outcome is clear.

If you were eligible and didn't vote, shame on you. People are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan for a right that we take so cavalierly. But then again, if you don't care enough to vote then I probably would feel better off if you didn't have a say in how this country is run.

It angers me that a cruel murderous fiend half way around the world thinks that he can influence this election by offering "security" to those states who don't vote for Bush. I don't think that such an "offer" should influence the way anyone votes, regardless of who you support. As Benjamin Franklin said, "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." I think that bin Laden's screed against America reveals that he has absolutely no understanding as to what this country is about. But that doesn't prevent his hatred from being directed our way.

So, I'll sit here tonight and watch the returns and listen to the pundits have their say. In the end the only poll that counts is the one taken in voting booths around this country. I pray that this country makes the right choice. If it's not the guy I support, then I hope I'm wrong about who should be in the White House. The world is at a very dangerous crossroad right now.

Long Weekend

Long Weekend

We got back from my brother-in-law's wedding up in Highland Falls, New York yesterday. The reception was at the Bear Mountain Inn just south of West Point. We had a great time.

Not wanting the good times to end, after getting back we all got into costume and decided to haunt my brother-in-law's neighborhood. My wife and I decided to dress up as rock musicians with long hair and truly outrageous clothes.

Now it's time to get serious with the election tomorrow. Regardless of who you plan to vote for, get out and vote. Enough people died for you to have that right so you might as well exercise it.

October Skies

October Skies

One of the nice things about our condo is that it has a balcony that faces south with an unobstructed view of the sky. I'll be out there tonight watching the total lunar eclipse with my Meade ETX.

An eclipse used to be viewed by some primitive cultures as a bad omen. If the Red Sox should lose tonight, does that mean that they'll go on to lose the next three after that? If that happens then there really is a curse.

On Our Way Back

On Our Way Back

We stopped at a rest area on the Parkway to get some coffee. When we came out there was a woman screaming for help saying that she couldn't wake her husband in the back of her car. He'd been throwing up and had laid down because he wasn't feeling well. Apparently, she'd been unable to wake him for about 10 minutes. We called for an ambulance and my brother-in-law found a paramedic who just happened to be in the fast food restaurant. He started CPR until the ambulance came. I don't think the guy made it. He seemed to have been dead for a while before the woman tried to wake him. I don't think I ever felt so helpless watching the EMT's work on him with his wife screaming and pleading all the while. I didn't know what to say or do for her. It just makes you think.
