Will it scan? Google's plan to provide instantly searchable copies of library books hits a legal land mine "There's a problem with roads to Utopia. They're often full of potholes, detours and, in the case of 19th Century American religious colonies, leaders who become more enamored of their own authority than their people's welfare. Google, of course, is not a single-minded religious colony -- although reports out of its Mountain View, Calif., corporate headquarters sometimes make one wonder." Just nu finns nio tidningar upplagda: Bang, Femkul, MANA, STICK, Paletten, KonstHantverk, SEX, Konstperspektiv och SVENSSON. Essay: An Idea Whose Time Has Come Back December 5, 2004 By SARAH GLAZER: "UNTIL recently, I thought electronic books were sharing a graveyard with eight-track tapes, Betamax video recorders and record players. Industry predictions five years ago that e-books would quickly replace paper never came to pass. I figured the digital book had failed because everyone shared my distaste for the first generation of clunky, book-sized devices designed for viewing them. And in fact Gemstar, the principal manufacturer of the electronic readers, stopped selling them last year. But it turns out the e-book market has been changing course and, though still tiny, has been growing at double-digit rates." Read more: NYTimes.com 2004-12-05 10:16:44 PM |

New! Project Gutenberg Consortia Center "The Mission of this center is to: Encourage the Creation and Distribution of eBooks [electronic books].In general, this center is focused on the collection of collections of eBooks, rather than the inclusion of one eBook at a time. Creation of such a Consortium Center brings with it some natural differences which should be obvious: such as the difference between doing new copyright research for one eBook at a time and dealing with the acquisition of an eBook collection that might contain hundreds or thousands of eBooks. In particular, this center acts as a clearinghouse for eBooks presumed to be public domain in the United States, but whose copyright data are not yet sufficient to pass the extreme copyright research required for inclusion in the general Project Gutenberg collection as per copyright requirements in the United States. gutenberg.net There will also be Project Gutenberg Consortia Centers for "life +50," "life +70" countries, and hopefully even for "life +60" countries such as India, Venezuela, etc." Read more: 2:35:30 PM |
