www.roanoke.com Editorial Op-Ed - Without protest, Americans are giving up freedom.

Today, people of the United States have given up their rights through the "Patriot Act," the Homeland Security Act and the Pentagon's new system of "Total Information Awareness." The astonishing thing about this "land of the free" is that most Americans now have no effective rights and do not care.

I know of one person who uses one, Howard Rheingold.

Is the Treo ideal?

I wrote up my requirements for the ideal PDA and got a bunch of suggestions.

The best so far seems to be the Treo 180. It[base ']s got a reasonably sized screen, a keyboard, runs PalmOS, works with T-Mobile (although it[base ']s not clear whether we get GPRS here), and functions as a cell phone.

It comes with a web browser, has at least one IMAP client (MultiMail Pro), and has an SSH client written by Ian Goldberg. You can write third-party apps and you can run Pippy, a Python interpreter on it.

Best of all, if you order before January 31, it[base ']s only $99 with a one-year cell-phone contract and 121 days of Internet service.

Other suggestions: Sharp Zaurus, Samsung i330.

The lady of the house and I love New Orleans and don't get there near enough. However if you do go, this Bed and Breakfast is a great place to stay.

Every Saturday afternoon from about 1-3pm CST, you can check out the brew cam of people enjoying Adult Beverages from Texas' Oldest Microbrewery. Of course it's much better if you're there in person.

Having just moved I needed to once again put ourselves on the Colorado No Call List. I did this earlier in the year for our other residence and our annoyance calls dropped dramatically. Note also that your local phone company has security and privacy measures that you can add to your service also. The best of the annoyance telemarketing calls was from a Lawn Service company here in Denver. It seems they wanted to come and give us an estimate on Lawn Service work and to perform aration of our lawn. Seeing as how we were living on the 10th Floor of a high rise, I was very interested in having this clueless company come by and see how they were going to perform from the 10th floor.

Intersil has WPA upgrade ready: The article doesn't make it clear to whom Intersil, the dominant Wi-Fi chipmaker, is providing its Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) upgrade -- consumers? OEMs? firmware developers? But it's good to see it's already ready to go. WPA is the Wi-Fi Alliance's standard to fix security an interim basis.

Gee, Your Beer Smells Terrific. Electronic noses have been around for several years, but a new version designed by Argentine researchers may represent more than a whiff of progress. Among other uses, the device will help beer manufacturers monitor the quality of their hops. Enrique Garabetyan reports from Buenos Aires. [Wired News]
